During the school year I’m always looking for easy meals that don’t take a lot of work to make once I get home.  I like the ease of making dinner in the slow cooker or the Instant Pot.

I was scrolling through my favorite food blogs when I came across a recipe for Slow Cooker Asian Pork.  I thought it looked really pretty and I liked all the different spices that were involved.  The only one I didn’t have was Chinese five spice.

What spices are in Chinese 5 Spice?

Chinese 5 spice is made of fennel seed, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, and peppercorns.  I usually have all of those spices on hand and can mix them together to make my own spice mixture.   If you make your own then you can leave out a spice if you really don’t like it too.

I have quite a few Asian pork recipes on my blog but nothing like this one.  The Eggplant and Ginger Pork Stir Fry is a super easy and flavorful recipe that we make often.  Our current favorite are these Sesame Crusted Pork Chops with Sweet and Sour Sauce.  The sauce has just a few ingredients and is totally delicious!

Of course with all of these Asian recipes we can’t forget about my homemade Pork Egg Rolls.  They are the only egg rolls we eat now!  I make a batch every 3 to 4 weeks.

This slow cooker pork recipe is fairly simple to make.  You can cut the peppers, onions, and mushrooms the night before to get a jump start on making this dish.  If you want to make a vegetable side try these Salt and Pepper Chips (potatoes) to go along with the pork instead of rice.

A pork roast, a container of mushrooms, a pepper, a bottle of soy sauce, a container of ginger.

Ingredients:

  • Chinese five spice (you can buy this or make your own)
  • black pepper and salt
  • boneless pork roast (you can also use a pork loin if you prefer)
  • soy sauce (low sodium is preferred but regular will work)
  • chicken broth (beef or vegetable broth can be substituted)
  • brown sugar (don’t skip this, it adds a nice flavor to the sauce)
  • ginger (fresh is best but ground can be substituted)
  • garlic cloves
  • Sriracha (or another kind of hot sauce)
  • mushrooms
  • onion
  • bell peppers

Making this Asian pork dish is a snap.   Simply combine the Chinese five spice, salt, and pepper in a bowl.  Rub it all over the pork roast and set aside.

In the slow cooker add the soy sauce and the chicken broth.   Whisk in the brown sugar.  Add the ginger, garlic, and Sriracha and mix well.

Place the pork roast into the slow cooker.   Place the mushrooms, onions, and peppers around the sides of the pork and close the lid.  Cook on low heat for 6-7 hours.

An hour before serving remove the pork and shred it.  Return to the slow cooker and cook for an additional hour to help the pork soak up the sauce.

how do you shred a pork roast?

Place the pork loin on a large cutting board.  You can also use a carving board that will catch the juices.   Use two forks to shred the pork. Hold one fork in each hand and pull the meat apart in opposite directions. Alternatively, you can use meat claws to make the shredding process easier.

Can I make Asian Pork in the Instant Pot?

You can make Asian pork in the Instant Pot.   Place everything in the Instant Pot and cook on high pressure for 40 minutes.  Let it release naturally for 10 minutes then release the steam.  Shred the pork, return to the pot, and hit the saute feature for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pork has soaked up some of the sauce.

I wasn’t sure what this pork was going to taste like and was a little worried about the cinnamon scent coming from the slow cooker.  It smelled both sweet and spicy.

The taste was very different from what I was expected but I really liked it.  It was slightly spicy with just a hint sweet, and I could really taste the Chinese five spice.  My husband also enjoyed it but said he would prefer it without the cinnamon next time which is an easy fix.

The only thing that made it even better was when it was topped off with just a bit of Sriracha.  It’s delicious!

How do I serve Asian Pork?

We serve it in several different ways but do what you family likes best.   We have served it over top of rice with an egg roll on the side.   I’ve also put it over top of mashed potatoes with a vegetable on the side.  I like to use the leftovers in a wrap with a little bit of cheese and lettuce for lunch.  It’s a pretty versatile dish that can be enjoyed several different ways.

    1. This sounds so good. The first time I used the 5 spice I was thinking the same about the cinnamon scent but the food was heavenly. Can’t wait to try this and for the leftovers!
