Escape from Witchwood Hollow by Jordan Elizabeth Mierek

Everyone in Arnn – a small farming town with more legends than residents – knows the story of Witchwood Hollow: if you venture into the whispering forest, the witch will trap your soul among the shadowed trees.

After losing her parents in a horrific terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, fifteen-year-old Honoria and her older brother escape New York City to Arnn. In the lure of that perpetual darkness, Honoria finds hope, when she should be afraid.

Perhaps the witch can reunite her with her lost parents. Awakening the witch, however, brings more than salvation from mourning, for Honoria discovers a past of missing children and broken promises.

To save the citizens of Arnn from becoming the witch’s next victims, she must find the truth behind the woman’s madness.

How deep into Witchwood Hollow does Honoria dare venture?  (-synopsis)

Witchwood Hollow

This book is unique because it takes place during three time periods.   It all centers around the town of Arnn and Witchwood Hollow within the town of Arnn.  Witchwood Hollow is an area of the woods where no one ventures because of the witch that lives there.  Anyone that goes into the woods gets lost and stays there forever.

The earliest story takes place in the 1600’s.  Lady Clifford is a young adult who traveled to America with her sister and brother-in-law.  She murders someone in her house and is chased into the woods.   Once in the woods she uses here magic to cast a spell on the woods where she will live forever.

In the 1850’s a young adult named Albertine comes to America from England to be with her father in the town of Arnn.   She is to marry his neighbor’s oldest son and live there with her family.  When she arrives she is told that her father will be back in town in a few days and that she needs to wait.   She is too excited to wait and tried to find him on her own only to end up in Witchwood Hollow.

In present day Honoria has just moved to Arnn with her brother, aunt, and uncle.   They left New York City after her parents were killed in the Twin Towers.  Honoria is learning to make her way in town and meets two girls that dare her to go into Witchwood Hollow.  She goes in but gets frightened and runs home but there is something intriguing about the woods.

Honoria meets a boy named Leon who is interested in history.  Together they learn about the history of Arnn and a bit about Witchwood Hollow and it’s victims.  Little do they know just how intertwined they’ll become with some of the victims.

All three stories move separately throughout the book until the end when all three worlds clash together.  We learn about the witch of Witchwood Hollow, the victims that were stuck in the woods, and what happened to each of them.   We also come to the final scene in the book which no one could have seen coming!

I found this book a little bit hard to get into because of the 3 time periods and all of the different characters.  However, the more I got into the book the more I wanted to read it.  I found it to be interested how the author connected the characters from the three time periods.

I found Honoria to be a loyal friend and someone who would do anything for the people she loved.  Leon was interested in history and wanted to learn about the past at any cost.   Lady Clifford is a selfish woman who wants things her way or noway and won’t let anyone stand in her way.  Then there is Albertine who doesn’t believe she is stuck in the woods even when the evidence is right there in front of her face.

This is a great novel with a lot of twists in it.   Anyone who likes paranormal books would enjoy this one.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
