I have trouble purchasing a gadget that only has one function. It seems like it takes up a ton of room and you only use it every couple of months. That goes for panini makers, rice cookers, and tortilla warmers. I’m not talking about a coffee maker (which I use every day), a slow cooker (which cooks everything), or a garlic press (because we use garlic daily).
One of these gadgets is the pizzelle maker. It makes one type of cookie and usually it’s a cookie that’s only made at the holidays. While I like pizzelle’s as much as the next person I have no use for a maker. I borrowed my mom’s over the holidays and I made precisely one batch of them. I don’t like the anise flavor and usually just go with plain old vanilla. They are pretty and I love them on cookie trays or at weddings.
So why am I telling you all of this? Because I like to find more uses for these single function gadgets. If I can find multiple uses then I have a better excuse for buying them. Since pizzelles are mostly a holiday cookie I set off to find a way to use them in the summer. My idea became the pizzelle sundae.
I used the pizzelle maker to make the cookies then took them out and immediately draped them over top of bowls. When they hardened they shaped into a solid bowl. It was pretty awesome because it was very similar to a waffle cone only it was a bowl shape. I put some ice cream in it, topped it off, and I had an edible bowl!
This is a great use for the pizzelle maker and I know kids would love it! They pizzelle sundae bowls are small so they are the perfect size for an ice cream snack or for kids. You can put your favorite toppings on them then stick in a spoon and enjoy your treat!
- 1 egg
- 3 T. sugar
- 2 T. brown sugar
- ½ t. cinnamon
- ½ t. nutmeg
- ½ t. salt
- 5 T. butter, melted
- 1 t. vanilla
- ½ c. flour
- Vanilla ice cream
- Caramel Sauce
- Whipped Cream
- Mini Chocolate Chips
- Whisk the egg in a medium bowl. Add in the sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk until smooth.
- Gently whisk in the butter and vanilla.
- Add the flour and whisk until fully incorporated.
- Cover the bowl and set aside for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat a pizzelle maker. Before adding the batter spray both sides with cooking spray.
- Add one tablespoon of batter to the center of each pizzelle plate on the pizzelle maker. Close the maker and cook for 30 seconds. Check to see the doneness of the cookie. Close and cook for an additional 10 seconds if desired.
- Using a long, flat icing spatula, pick up the pizzelle and drape it gently over top of a small bowl and allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining batter.
- Gently remove the pizzelle bowls from the bowls. Fill with ice cream then top with caramel sauce, whipped cream, and mini chocolate chips.
