Once your baby has been eating food for a while you are going to want to try and give them some snacks.  This was really hard for Baby J as he was used to the purees and would gag on anything that wasn’t pureed.  We tried a variety of snacks made for babies in addition to regular snacks before we found the ones we liked best.

J Eating in high chair

This is a review of the baby snacks we’ve tried and what we like best and why.  In addition to these baby snacks I found that soft fruits like peaches, bananas, and plums cut into small chunks worked well as first snack foods.   Baby J also loved cubes of avocado or small pieces of cucumber.   The other thing he ate a lot of in the beginning (and still does today) is chunks of cheese.   Of course, he is my child so how could he not like cheese?

Keep in mind that there are so many snacks for babies out there and this is just a sample of what we’ve tried.  Also, I don’t feed him baby snacks much in the house but he does eat them when we are on the go because they make him happy.  Baby snacks are also a great way for babies to learn how to feed themselves with their fingers.

Gerber Puffs

Puffs are one of those foods that I think most babies eat.   When I wasn’t a parent this was the one baby snack that I was aware of.  It seems to be a favorite for a variety of reasons.

Gerber Puffs

Things I like about puffs:

  • They melt in the baby’s mouth so they are easy to eat.
  • They contain no artificial flavors or sweeteners.
  • They are easy for baby to pick up with thumb and pointer finger (good OT skill!)
  • They contain 2 grams of whole grains per servings.
  • They stick to fingers which makes them a great first food.
  • They are Non-GMO.

Things I don’t like about Gerber Puffs:

  • They are mostly rice flour.
  • They have added sugar.

Overall score:  4 out of 5 stars.

Gerber Yogurt Melts

Gerber Yogurt Melts

I had never heard about yogurt melts before I had a baby but I think they are a great idea.  Instead of trying to refrigerate a yogurt and find a spoon when needed, yogurt melts are ready for baby to pop into his or her mouth on demand.  I’ve tried them myself and I’ll admit, I really like these!  I would eat them myself for a snack because the crunch is satisfying and the flavor is creamy and delicious.

Things I like about Gerber Yogurt Melts:

  • They are made with real fruit and yogurt.
  • They have a great crunch to them.
  • They melt in baby’s mouth.
  • They are a great size for baby to pick up.
  • No artificial flavors or sweeteners.
  • They stay crisp in their packaging.

Things I don’t like about Gerber Yogurt Melts:

  • They contain added sugar.
  • Once they are out in the air they become chewy and hard to eat.
  • Make sure your little one can chew before giving these to them.

Overall score:   4 out of 5 stars.

Happy Baby Puffs:

Happy Baby Puffs

This is another brand that makes puffs for babies.  While Gerber makes puffs in a star shape, these are in a circle shape.   The Happy Baby Puffs are all organic.  I think that these have a better flavor than the Gerber Puffs but Baby J prefers Gerber Puffs any day of the week.

Things I like about the Happy Baby Puffs:

  • They are organic.
  • They melt in baby’s mouth.
  • They come in fruit and vegetable flavor pairs.
  • They contain Vitamin E and C.
  • They are easy for baby to pick up.
  • They do not contain added sugar.

Things I don’t like about Happy Baby Puffs:

  • They are mostly rice flour.
  • Baby J chokes on these occasionally.

Overall Score:  3.5 out of 5 stars.

Happy Baby Creamies

Creamies are a melt in your mouth snack made with organic fruits, vegetables, and coconut milk.  I wasn’t sure what to think about these but I love the crunch and flavor of them and Baby J seems to enjoy snacking on them as well.  They only come in two flavors but both flavors contain both fruits and vegetables.

Things I like about Happy Baby Creamies:

  • They are organic.
  • They contain both fruits and vegetables.
  • They are dairy free.
  • Coconut Milk is lower in sugar than cow’s milk.
  • They are made almost entirely out of fruit and veggie purees.
  • They melt in baby’s mouth.
  • They are easy to pick up.

Things I don’t like about Happy Baby Creamies:

  • They are circular so if baby can’t chew they may choke on them.

Overall score:  4.5 out of 5 stars

Baby Mum Mum

This is actually the very first snack we tried with J.  It is a long stick that melts in baby’s mouth and comes in several different flavors.  These are great for when baby wants to start feeding themselves because they can use their entire hand to grip these instead of just 2 fingers like the snacks above.

Things I like about Baby Mum Mum:

  • They are allergy free.
  • They are gluten free.
  • They contain no added fat or oil.
  • They are easy for baby to hold.
  • They are dissolve in baby’s mouth.
  • They are great when baby is teething.
  • They are non-GMO.

Things I don’t like about Baby Mum Mum:

  • They are long so baby can stick it far into their mouth and gag.
  • They are mostly made of rice flour.
  • Baby can choke if they bite off a big piece.

Overall score:  3.5 out of 5.
