With summer right around the corner I’ve been thinking about cookouts. I love hosting people at our house for a cookout because putting food on the grill is a lot easier to clean up then cooking in the kitchen. While food is generally easy to plan I like to have a fun beverage for people to enjoy besides the typical water, iced tea, beer, and wine.
One of my favorite summer beverages is fresh squeezed lemonade. I like to make my own because I can control both the sugar level and the flavors. It’s fun to mix together several different fruits with the lemons and come out with a whole new flavor. This time I simply looked at what I had available in the house and picked pineapple, blood oranges, and lemons.
I didn’t use real pineapple because it’s pretty hard to juice a pineapple. Instead I used a can of pineapple juice. It would be fun to brush some brown sugar on a few pineapple slices, grill them, and then put them on the side of this lemonade as a garnish. You can also certainly use regular oranges in this recipe but I went with the blood oranges because it makes the color of this lemonade pretty.
To make the lemonade I simply had to combine fresh squeezed lemon juice, fresh squeezed blood orange juice, the pineapple juice, and simply syrup to my taste. If you don’t have simple syrup you can make it by combining a half cup of water and a half cup of sugar in a saucepan and heat it until the sugar is dissolved. That’s it!
In order to serve the lemonade I poured it into JoyJolt Stella Highball Glasses because you need a tall glass for lemonade. These glasses are made of crystal and are shatter resistant so they are perfect for taking outside. I filled them with ice, poured in the lemonade, and topped them with a slice of lemon, a slice of orange, and a fun paper straw.
This lemonade is super refreshing and it has an explosion of flavors. It’s a bit tart from the lemon, has a nice citrus flavor from the blood oranges, and a touch of sweetness from the pineapple juice. It isn’t overly sweet because I chose not to add too much simple syrup. It’s the perfect fruity lemonade for a cookout.
