Summer is coming to an end and that means I’m going back to work in just one week. I have mixed feelings about returning to work. On one hand, I’m sad to see summer come to an end. On the other hand, I’m excited to get back and see my students! One thing is for sure; I’ve got to find a way to work through the mid-day slump. Eating lunch at 12:00 and then not having dinner until 6 or 7 leaves me tired and hungry mid-day. I feel bad for the students I have between 2-3 because I’m often running out of energy. I’ve recently come up with 5 ways to help me work through my mid-day slump.
1. Get Up and Walk Around
Surprisingly this one is the easiest for me. Whenever I start feeling tired in the middle of the day I usually stand up and walk around for at least 5 minutes. I’m lucky that I have a job where my students often need a break and I can walk up and down the halls with one of them or I can walk from one end of the building to another to check on several of my students. No matter what you are doing, if you physically get up and move for 5 minutes it will give you more energy to put back into your work.
2. Grab a Healthy, High-Protein Snack
Many times my energy is low mid-day because I haven’t had enough to eat and I start getting hungry. I like to grab a quick and easy snack that is both healthy and high in protein to help power me through my afternoons. One of my favorite snacks is Plenti Greek Yogurt. Plenti Yogurt is a great snack choice because it’s filled with wholesome ingredients and protein plus it tastes great! Plenti Greek Yogurt comes in 8 delicious flavors including Black Cherry, Coconut, Blueberry, Peach, Vanilla, Spiced Apple, Strawberry, and Raspberry. The thing that is different about this yogurt is that it’s made with real fruit, whole grain oats, flax, and pumpkin seeds. It’s a filling snack that really boosts my energy mid-day and it only tastes minutes to eat. It’s a great way to get through the middle of the day. 3. Talk to Someone
This sounds ridiculous right? Talk to someone? It really is a great way to re-energize. Getting your mind off of whatever work you are doing and chatting with a friend or co-worker can be a great way to energize and it only takes a few minutes. It’ll give you a change of scenery, get your mind off your work for a few minutes, and could even lead to a few laughs or a smile.
4. Stay Hydrated
There is nothing worse then working at your desk for hours on end and forgetting to drink. Dehydration can make you tired, distracted, or even give you headaches. Make sure to keep a bottle of water, a cup of iced tea, or even juice on your desk in your line of vision for you remember to take a sip from it every time you see it. If you run out of liquid during the day get up from your desk and refill your cup.
5. Take a few minutes to Organize and Regroup
Even though organizing the mountain of paperwork on your desk is still working, it can really help mid-day. I often look at the papers on my desk and think that I’ll never get through them. It makes me even more exhausted then I was. I find that if I sort the papers into piles and figure out what I want to do before I go home, what can wait until tomorrow, and what doesn’t really need to be done it not only lowers my stress but it helps me feel accomplished and more motivated to get to the end of the day and finish what I’ve started.
So the next time you feel your energy start sinking after lunch or your eyes start to glaze over mid-day remember the five tips from above. So whether you get moving, have a healthy and filling snack like Plenti Yogurt, talk to a friend, stay hydrated, or organize your work space, do something that will help you get back on track and make it through the mid-day slump.
