How is it already the middle of July? This summer is going too fast! I'm not sure whose summer goes faster, teachers or students, but I know my summer has flown by and I'm already starting to think about going back to school.
On a recent visit to Walmart I noticed that several boxes of Kellogg's cereal were marked with 1 Box=1 Book on the top of them. I hadn't heard about this so naturally I grabbed a box and turned it over. I was very excited when I found that specially marked boxes of Kellogg's products include a code to receive 1 free box! As a teacher, this is very exciting. I often use my own money to help build my classroom library and any free books I can get is a huge help!
I ended up buying a box of Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch and a box of Kellogg's 16 ct. Pop-Tarts to serve as double duty in my classroom. I am a special education teacher and work with a lot of different children. Throughout the year we have anywhere between 15-20 delays or early dismissals due to holidays, bad weather, or professional development. On these days the students don't receive breakfast because we aren't in school for the full amount of time.
This works out for most students but not for mine. My students get a little crabby without something to eat in the morning so I purchase breakfast items with my own money and invite all of my students to my classroom to eat breakfast, finish their homework, or read a book on these short days. Now, thanks to Kellogg's, when I buy breakfast food for my students not only do I help give them a good start to the day but I get a free book for my classroom library as well! My students will be super excited to see all the new books in my classroom library this year.
Getting a free book is easy. The first thing I did was purchase the specially marked Kellogg's products. Then I created a Kellogg's Family Rewards account which took less then 5 minutes. After creating an account all I had to do is enter my code. Remember, you receive 1 free, full-length Scholastic book for each specially marked Kellogg's product you buy up to 30 books!
Once I entered the codes it took me to a page to redeem the codes for the free books. I could do 1 of 3 things at this point. I could choose a free paperback book, a free e-book, or I could donate a book! Donating a book would be a great way to add to your own child's classroom library. However, since my classroom library is a little outdated, I decided to choose 2 paperback books to put on my shelves at school. Once I got to the page where I could choose my books I was able to choose from beginning reader, middle reader, tween/teen, or Spanish/bilingual. Since my students are in elementary school and are special education students, I chose books from the beginning readers. I simply clicked on the books I wanted (I chose a dinosaur book and a firefighter book-both super popular with my students) and a verification page popped up. I clicked on "place order" and that's it! The books will arrive in 6-8 weeks. It's that easy!
There are 3 ways to redeem your codes. I think the easiest is going on Kellogg's Family Reward app but you can also upload it via text or scan it into your computer. All codes have to be redeemed for a free Scholastic book within 14 days of purchase. All codes also have to be redeemed by March 31, 2016.
Don't have a Walmart near you? No problem! You can also buy directly on Walmart.com and receive a free book from purchases made between 7/21/15 and 9/11/15. Look for the Buy Now button at Walmart for a list of all eligible items.
So what are you waiting for? Get out and buy specially marked Kellogg's products and start receiving your free books! I plan on sharing this information with all of my parents so that they can receive free books for their children by purchasing products they already love. Every year I tell the parents how important it is to read with their children and now they can start filling their home library with free books that the child chooses! It's time to get #Back2SchoolReady !

I love Kellogg's Family Rewards. I use them ALL the time, but we eat a LOT of cereal in my house. I always love doing their book and other promotions. It's pretty awesome. Glad you get to use it for your classroom.
