I’m all about making a bunch of tiny snacks for holiday parties, dinner parties, and sports events.  I like people to be able to pick up a snack or appetizer and walk around and mingle while they are eating.  No one wants to be stuck at a table during a party or sports event.  People like to walk around and talk.

I usually do a lot of different dips, a cheese and cracker plate, veggies and dip, and some some desserts.  Since it’s winter I like to make a few hot appetizers too because people like to stay warm when there is snow on the ground.  I’ve been trying to make a few new ones and include some veggies to make them at least semi-healthy.

Bake up a batch of these Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Tarts

I remembers seeing a few different hot apps in a bundle of papers a friend at work had given me.  She attended a cooking night at our local community college and had shared the recipes with me.  I found the one Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Tarts and knew I was making that one.  I mean, who can resist caramelized onions and cheese on a puff pastry?

These buttery Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Tarts are the perfect finger food!

Instead of making it into one big tart like the recipe called for I chose to make it into individual tarts using puff pastry cups. They were super easy to make with the caramelized onions being the most labor intensive part.  Once they were finished I took a bite and thought they were perfection.  Caramelized onions and gooey cheese stuffed inside buttery puff pastry makes for a tasty appetizer.

Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Tarts

Caramelized onions and gooey gruyere tucked into buttery puff pastry cups.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoons butter
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons black pepper
  • 24 puff pastry cups
  • 1 c. shredded gruyere cheese
  • 1 teaspoons thyme

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  • In a large skillet saute the onion in the olive oil and butter over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden brown.
  • Add in the garlic, salt, and pepper and cook for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Meanwhile, bake the 24 puff pastry cups on 2 baking sheets for 15 minutes.
  • remove from oven and press down the centers.
  • Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of cheese in the cups, top with onions, and then sprinkle with more cheese.
  • Bake for an additional 5-7 minutes or until cheese has melted.
  • Serve warm.
