Halloween is synonymous with candy and sugar.   Every year when Halloween rolls around the kids at school talk about all the sweets and treats they are going to get.  The entire first week of November they come in hyped up on sugar.

While I’m all for candy and sweets in moderation, I think that healthier Halloween treats are great in the weeks before the actual day.  I love making little themed treats during the entire month but I don’t want my son eating a ton of baked goods and sugar.

These Monster Mouths are the perfect after school snack or a fun treat on the weekend.   The base of the mouths are apples which are in season in the fall and are a fruit kids really seem to enjoy.

The eyeballs are when things start getting a little crazy.  I’ve seen tons of these monster mouths using marshmallows and chocolate chips for the eyes which work well but they aren’t healthy.  In this recipe I took peeled and seeded lychees for the white part of the eye and put a blueberry in the middle.

For the mouth I used peanut butter but you can use any nut butter that works for your family.   I pushed slivered almonds into the top and bottom of the mouths for teeth.  Then I thinned out strawberry jam by adding a little water and just painted it on with a toothpick as blood.

These Monster Mouths ended up looking super creepy.   I was really excited by them because I knew kids would enjoy them.   I showed one to my 3 year old and he fake screamed and then cracked up and thought they were super funny so I’m counting this one as a win!

Pro Tips and Substitutions:

  • While I cored my apple and then cut it into 5 wedges you can use an apple slicer and just have smaller mouths.
  • Can’t find lychees?   I thought green grapes would work with small blueberries in the middle of them.
  • Make sure to brush the outsides of the apples with some type of citrus juice so they don’t brown.  Lemon juice works best.

Monster Mouths

Yield: 5 monster mouths
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

Looking for a healthy treat for the kids this Halloween?   Kids and adults will love these creepy Monster Mouths made with fruit, nuts, and fresh jam.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 10 lychees, peeled and seeded
  • 10 blueberries
  • 2 Tablespoons nut butter
  • 2 Tablespoons slivered almonds
  • 1 Tablespoon strawberry or raspberry jelly or jam

Instructions

  1. Core the apple and cut into five wedges.
  2. Cut out a wedge for the mouth but do not cut the whole way through the apple wedge. Make it big enough that you can add the slivered almonds.
  3. Place a blueberry inside of each lychee. Use a toothpick to spear the lychee and blueberry then use the bottom portion to stick two of the "eyes" into the top of the apple wedge.
  4. Spread a little bit of nut butter in the mouth of each apple.
  5. Press 5-10 slivered almonds into the top and bottom of the mouth for the teeth.
  6. Add a little water to your jam or jelly and "paint" it on with a toothpick.
  7. These will stay fresh for 4-6 hours if you brush the apples with lemon or lime juice.
