Soft and chewy chocolate Nutella cookies are filled with chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and the delicious flavor of chocolate hazelnut from the Nutella.

A plate with three chocolate Nutella cookies.

Recently my mom has gotten a great deal on Nutella which means that every time I see her she gives me another jar of Nutella.  While I am a fan of Nutella there’s only so much I can eat on a regular basis.

I decided it was time to come up with a plan to bake with this chocolate hazelnut spread.   I really like Nutella in banana bread of muffins but I wanted to try something different.

After searching through recipes I narrowed it down to cookies, brownies, or cupcakes.  I was looking for something easy so I decided to go with the Nutella cookies.

I liked that in addition to the chocolate hazelnut from the Nutella they also had cocoa powder in them.  On top of that there were chocolate chips in the cookies too.  Can you ever go wrong with three different types of chocolate?

Ingredients:

  • all purpose flour
  • cocoa powder (use a good quality cocoa powder)
  • cornstarch (don’t skip it, it helps with the texture)
  • baking soda
  • salt (I like using sea salt but table salt is fine)
  • butter (I like using salted but you can use unsalted if you prefer)
  • brown sugar (you can use light or dark)
  • Nutella (or any other chocolate hazelnut spread)
  • vanilla extract
  • egg
  • chocolate chips (you can use milk chocolate, semisweet, or dark chocolate)

These cookies were easy to make.  I was able to mix them up in under 10 minutes.   While the original recipe says to refrigerate the dough I was in a hurry and skipped that step.

The cookies baked up perfectly in the oven.   When they came out I used a glass and swirled the cookies around to give them a perfectly round shape.

What is Nutella?

Nutella is a chocolate hazelnut spread that can be spread on toast, baked into cakes and cookies, or eaten right from the jar.  Nutella is a brand name and there are other chocolate hazelnut spreads out there.

Why is there cornstarch in the cookie dough?

The cornstarch helps to keep the cookies soft even after they have cooled.  While you can leave it out, it does help with the texture and softness of the cookies.

Do I have to chill the dough?

While it’s recommended that you do chill the dough I have baked these without chilling and while they are a little bit flatter they still taste amazing.

Can I freeze the dough?

You can freeze the dough.   Once the cookie dough is made form the dough into balls and place on a cookie sheet.   Freeze for 30 minutes to flash freeze them.   Put the cookie dough balls into a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months.  When ready to bake you can bake from frozen, just add an additional 2 minutes to the baking time.

These cookies were so good.   They were soft, chewy, and tasted of chocolate.   The hazelnut flavor was subtle but it was definitely there.

I liked that the cookies stayed soft for a few days because often cookies harden way too quickly.  I did keep them in an air tight container on my table which helped.

More Nutella Recipes:

I took a batch of these cookies to school and I can honestly say I got more comments about them then I have on any other cookie in a few years.   People came in to tell me how amazing they were and asking if I would be making them again soon.
