Take homemade hot chocolate to a whole new level with graham cracker crumbs, toasted marshmallows, and a chocolate drizzle on top.

Do you ever have a day when you’re cold, you’re tired, and things just aren’t going your way? Unfortunately I’ve had a lot more of those lately at school. So by the time I get home I just want something warm and comforting.

S'mores Hot Chocolate is overflowing with toasted marshmallows

Whenever I want something warm and comforting I turn to chocolate. Who doesn’t love chocolate when they are feeling blue? When it’s cold outside I want nothing but hot chocolate. The warm chocolate topped with marshmallows warms my belly and my spirit.

I have some really great hot cocoa recipes that I love to make in the winter.  My Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa is a favorite.  I like to make the mix for it to give as gifts at the holidays or to keep in my pantry so I can make it quickly all winter long.

When I want something decadent I go for Red Velvet Hot Chocolate with marshmallows and a chocolate drizzle.  If it’s been a really rough day then Bailey’s Hot Cocoa is the drink I’m turning too at the end of the day.  Then whenever I’m having a party I use the BEST Scratch Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate.

However, there are some days when even hot chocolate can’t do the trick. That’s when I bring out the S’mores Hot Chocolate. That’s right! I make hot chocolate even more decadent using toasted marshmallows, chocolate syrup, and graham cracker crumbs.

S'mores Hot Chocolate is a decadent beverage that is perfect for the holidays.

What are S’mores?

S’mores are a popular campfire treat made with three simple ingredients: marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. The name “s’mores” is a contraction of the phrase “some more,” indicating that these treats are so good that you’ll want some more.

Ingredients:

  • milk (whole milk is best in this recipe to keep the cocoa thick and smooth)
  • cocoa powder (use a good cocoa powder like Ghirardelli or similar)
  • granulated sugar (you can use brown sugar if you want to add a hint of caramel)
  • graham crackers (you will be crushing them so broken graham crackers are fine)
  • mini marshmallows
  • chocolate syrup (this is optional but makes it so much better)

To make S’mores Hot Cocoa first you need to make the homemade hot cocoa.  Place a little chocolate sauce on the rim of a mug then roll it in the graham cracker crumbs.

Heat the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar on a stove and mix until it simmers.  Pour the hot cocoa into the prepared mug.  Immediately top it with a bunch of marshmallows.

Now it’s time to toast the marshmallows.   If you have a baking torch that is the easiest and quickest way to toast the marshmallows.  Simply put the torch to the marshmallows and move back and forth until they are golden brown.

How do I toast the marshmallows without a baking torch?

Luckily there is an alternative to using a baking torch since many people do not own one.  You can place the mug of hot cocoa on a cookie sheet with sides or a baking dish and place in the oven.   Turn on the broiler and watch the mug carefully.  It will only take 1-2 minutes for the marshmallows to get golden brown.  Remove it from the oven and let cool for a minute or two before you can handle the mug.

The smell of the toasted marshmallows is heavenly. You can enjoy your hot cocoa right away or make it more decadent by drizzling it with chocolate sauce.

This hot cocoa tastes amazing. Graham crackers with toasted marshmallows and chocolate is a winning combination. This is the ultimate in comfort beverages.

Can I make a large batch for a holiday party?

It’s easy to make a large batch of this hot cocoa.   Simply pour a half gallon of milk into a slow cooker along with a half cup of cocoa powder and half cup of sugar.  You can also pour in a gallon of milk with a cup of cocoa powder and a cup of sugar. Heat on low until it is warm.  You can keep it on low for a few hours and let guests serve themselves.

The great thing about these is that you can rim the mugs with graham crackers ahead of time and then let them sit next to the slow cooker for a party.  Leave the kitchen torch next to the marshmallows and let guests toast their own.

You can also set a baking pan next to the slow cooker with directions on toasting the marshmallows in the oven. When people arrive simply have them ladle out their hot cocoa, top with marshmallows, and broil. Three minutes later you have hot mugs of S’mores Cocoa!
