Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake

Warm caramel and apples topped off a delicious semi-homemade spiced cake.

Ingredients

For the topping:

  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/4 c. heavy cream
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 c. nuts chopped
  • 2 apples peeled, cored, and sliced

For the cake:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 1/4 c. water
  • 1/3 c. vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • 1 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13 inch pan with cooking spray.
  • In a saucepan heat the butter, heavy cream and brown sugar over low heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted. Pour into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with the nuts then top with sliced apples.
  • In large bowl combine the cake mix, water, oil, eggs, apple pie spice and cinnamon. Mix well until combined then carefully pour over top of the apples.
  • Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes.
  • Run a knife around the edge of the cake and place a large cutting board on top of it. Quickly flip the cake over and remove from the pan. Cool completely.
