Classic Sloppy Joes

Beef tossed with garlic, onions, and peppers then mixed with a tangy homemade sauce and placed on slider buns.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons water divided
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 lb. 85/15 lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 onion chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 c. tomato paste
  • 1/3 c. ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slider buns

Instructions

  • Combine 1 tablespoon water and 1/2 t. baking soda in a bowl.
  • In a large bowl toss the beef with the baking soda mixture and half the salt. Set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in the onion, bell peppers, and remaining baking soda and stir to coat. Cook, stirring occasionally, 3-4 minutes. Add in the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Stir in the sugar, paprika, remaining salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add in the tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat, until the beef is no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
  • Add in the ketchup, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce and stir until well combined.
  • Taste the mixture and season with salt and pepper as needed.
  • Serve on slider buns.
