I love Halloween.   It’s such a fun time of year!   Since I teach elementary school, the kids are all really into it as well.  I usually have some type of Halloween party for them a few days before the actual holiday and make lots of fun holiday themed treats.   This year will be no exception.  However, I made these super fun cookies last year and the kids liked the so much I’ll probably be making them again this year.

Swirled Colored Halloween Cookies are fun to eat and make!

The best part about these cookies are how easy they are to make.  You can use any sugar cookie dough recipe or even use a mix if you don’t have time to make it yourself.  Then you dye the pieces different colors, roll and your cookies are finished!  These cookies are also cool because you can use whatever color combination you want for whatever holiday or event you are baking for.

Step by step directions on how to make fun Swirly Halloween Cookies

I love the way they turn out.   Each cookie is different because of the swirl pattern.  I added Halloween colored sprinkles on the outside edges of the cookies.   The kids thought they were neat because of the vibrant colors on them.   These are a perfect for a Halloween party or to give out to family friends.

Swirly Halloween Cookies are fun to make and even more fun to eat!

Total Time: 1 hour 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Orange, Black, Green, and Purple Food Coloring (gel coloring works best)
  • Halloween colored sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a medum mixing bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer beat the butter until smooth. Gradually add in the sugar and continue mixing on medium until fluffy.
  3. Add in the egg and vanilla and beat until mixed well.
  4. Place the mixer on low and add in the flour mixture, mixing until just blended.
  5. Knead the dough into a ball and then roll into a long log. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight.
  6. Remove from refrigerator and take off the plastic wrap. Cut the log in half and then cut each piece in half.
  7. Add one color to each piece of dough. Work the color into the dough until it has a deep color.
  8. Next, ping a marble sized ball of dough from each color and roll each one into a small ball. Gently press them together and roll into a gentle ball.
  9. Place the dough ball on a cookie sheet and repeat with remaining dough.
  10. At this point preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  11. Roll each ball into a long rope (about 7-8 inches long).
  12. Starting at one end, coil the cookie rope into a spiral shape cookie. Roll the outside edges of the cookie in the sprinkles then place the cookie on the cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining cookies.
  13. Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes or until the edges just begin to look brown. Allow to cool for 2 minutes then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

  1. These are fabulous, Heather, and I can certainly see how you could tailor them to the color scheme of ANY party! Kind of psychedelic, like tie-dye. They put me in mind of fabrics from my childhood in the Seventies. 🙂
