Applesauce is one of those things that I think is so much better when it’s homemade.  I know people think I’m nuts when I say that but it’s the truth.   Store bought applesauce is often really yellow in color, has additives, and doesn’t have much flavor.  I’m all about the store bought stuff when I’m baking because I think it’s great for that but if I’m sitting down to have some applesauce it’s going to be homemade.

The problem with homemade applesauce is it takes a while.  You need to peel the apples, chop the apples, cook them until they are tender, and then get them to a decent consistency.   I haven’t made applesauce in several years because it just takes too long.

However, I recently found a recipe for applesauce in the Instant Pot and I was sold.   I still had to peel the apples but I simply sliced them and put them in the pot.  There are very few ingredients in this recipe which is one of the reasons I really wanted to try it.   Baby J likes applesauce a lot and I’d love to be able to make him some while apples are in season.

Last week I received a delivery of Envy Apples.  Oh my word are they delicious!   These apples are sweet, juicy, and firm.   My husband and I have been enjoying them for lunch.  Since I had these awesome apples I didn’t want them to go to waste because there were so many of them.  I thought they would be perfect in this Instant Pot Applesauce.

The prep work for the applesauce took about 15 minutes.  Most of that was peeling the apples and slicing them.  After that I put them in the Instant Pot and let it go.  About 30 minutes later I opened it up and it smelled awesome.  The apples were still in the slices though so I wasn’t sure how hard it was going to be to turn it in to applesauce.

It turns out I shouldn’t have worried.  I got a potato masher and they were so soft it was mashed in a matter of minutes.   I like my applesauce slightly chunky so I scooped out a bunch of it like that and put it in the refrigerator.  J likes it smoother so I simply put his in the food processor for 30 seconds and it was the perfect consistency.  I also kept the vanilla out of his since it’s homemade with vodka.

Kids and adults will love this chunky and spiced Instant Pot Applesauce

This applesauce was so good!   It was sweet but not overly so.   The slightly chunky texture let me know that it was filled with real apples.   The color is a light brown from the spices that I put in and the vanilla adds a bit of flavor.   Instant Pot Applesauce is a great snack for kids or even a breakfast!  I like to warm mine up for about 20 seconds cold mornings and enjoy it.
