This week on Baby Food Fridays I’m sharing our first mixed puree!   When thinking about mixing purees make sure you are mixing two foods you have already given your baby so that you know there are no allergies.   After that you need to think about what foods will pair well together.

So far we have given Baby J pears, apples, sweet potatoes, avocados, and oatmeal.   I wanted to start mixing purees to give him some different flavors.   His favorite food so far is sweet potatoes so I started with that.  When looking at the other foods he has eaten I figured my only real choices were to mix it with apples or pears.

I chose apples because I thought the sweet and tart flavor would work well with the sweet potato.   I made the puree and tasted it.  While I don’t like sweet potatoes normally I actually found this one to be pretty tasty.  I liked the flavor the apples added to the sweet potatoes.

The one problem I had with this puree is that it was really thick.  I added a lot more water then normal and it was still thick.  So once I pulled it out of the freezer and thawed it I added even more water to thin it out.  This recipe makes about 10-12 servings so I made 6 servings with just the apples and sweet potatoes and then I put cinnamon in the other 6 servings.

Baby J loved the puree!   I’m pretty sure he liked it just as much as he likes plain sweet potatoes.  He kept opening up his mouth for more and he actually whimpered when his first bowl of it was gone.  I guess I’m going to have to make another batch soon!

Yield: 12 servings
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

Sweet Potatoes and apples pair well together as a mixed baby's first food.

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 apple
  • 3/4 c. water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Pierce the sweet potato and place it in the microwave for 6 minutes. Remove from microwave and let sit 2-3 minutes then pull off the skin. Cut into 4 pieces and place in the Baby Bullet or a blender.
  2. Peel the apple and remove the core. Cut into 4 pieces and steam in the microwave for 3-4 minutes. Put in the Baby Bullet or blender with the sweet potato.
  3. Add in the water and cinnamon and blend for 30 seconds or until smooth. I ended up having to add a few additional tablespoons of water because it was so thick but use your best judgement.
  4. Keep 3-4 servings in the refrigerator and place the rest in the freezer for up to 30 days.
