Let me be the first to say I’ve never had Nashville Hot Chicken.  It’s always one of those things I’ve seen pictures of and just drool over but there is nowhere in my town or nearby that serves it and I’m not big on deep frying anything so it just hasn’t happened.  I’m hoping one day I’ll walk in to a restaurant and it’ll be on the menu.

If you haven’t heard of Nashville Hot Chicken it’s fried chicken covered in a spicy sauce made with cayenne then served on white bread and topped with pickles.  As I said, I’m not big on frying food myself so when I saw a recipe for Slow Cooker Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders that made the chicken in the slow cooker without being fried I was totally sold.  I just needed to come up with sliders and a few pickles.

Everything you need to make Hot Chicken Sliders

While you can buy the ready to use slider buns I prefer to bake mine fresh.  That doesn’t mean I make them from scratch because I don’t.  I use Rhodes Yeast Dinner Rolls.   You take them out of the freezer and allow them to rise for 3-4 hours or you can put them into the refrigerator to thaw and rise for 8 hours.  This is perfect when pairing them with a slow cooker meal.  Then you simply bake them and serve.

When making this meal I took the Rhodes rolls out of the freezer, put them in a baking dish, covered with plastic wrap, and refrigerated them.  Then I took the chicken breasts and mixed them with the sauce ingredients and turned the slow cooker on lo.  I went to work and when I got home the chicken was done and the rolls were ready to bake.

While I baked the rolls in the oven I shredded the chicken in the slow cooker.  Then I added a touch more salt and hot sauce.   When the rolls came out of the oven I allowed them to cool for 5 minutes then I sliced them and topped them with the spicy chicken and a few pickle slices.

These sliders were amazing.   They were spicy and just a tad sweet and the pickles added a great sour flavor.  The rolls were warm and held up to the chicken just fine.  My husband and I both enjoyed these sliders and I was glad I didn’t put in quite as much cayenne as they called for because they were pretty spicy.

You could certainly serve them with ranch or blue cheese dressing if you wanted as a dipping sauce or to help cool off the heat of the chicken.  These would be a perfect Game Day snack or appetizer or they are great for dinner parties or even just for dinner.  We will definitely be having these again soon!

  1. I’ve never tried Nashville chicken either and have always wanted to. At least with the slow cooker, you van enjoy the flavors without the frying.
