After 3 three weeks of dreary weather the sun was finally shining on Friday!   I was so happy to see it and I’m hoping that it means this is the beginning of summer.

When I think of summer I think of sunshine, swimming, and grilled food.  My husband is the main grill master in our house but over the past 2 years I’ve been doing more and more grilling on my own.  My favorite thing to grill is steak.   I love the smell of a steak on the grill…yum!   We also do a lot of corn and potatoes on the grill as well.

I wanted to do something different on the grill this week.  I thought about making a grilled dessert and almost went that way but I have a lot of cookies to make this weekend so I figured I’d just eat some of those.   So I went a little crazy and made a Grilled Fruit Sangria!

Ingredients:

  • white wine (I prefer a dry wine but if you like sweeter sangria use a sweet wine)
  • orange liqueur (I generally use Triple Sec)
  • light lemonade
  • peaches (firmer peaches are better in this case)
  • fresh pineapple (don’t use canned!)
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon

No you don’t have to clean out your ears, I did say that I made a grilled beverage.   In order to create this recipe I took peach halves and slices of pineapple and brushed them with a sweet cinnamon butter mixture.

Then I put them on the grill and let them get charred.  After they cooled I cut them into pieces.  Then I mixed up the sangria, added most of the fruit, and put it in the refrigerator.

what is Sangria?

Sangria is a popular alcoholic beverage that originated in Spain.   It’s a fruity drink typically made with wine, chopped fruit, some type of sweetener, and either brandy or liqueur for added flavor.  While the traditional sangria is made with red wine, making it with white wine or rosé has become more common.

can I use other fruit?

You can use other fruit but I used peaches and pineapple because they grill well and the combination of the two is delicious with a white wine.

what type of wine is best for sangria?

The type of white wine you will use depends on your tastes.  Popular white wines used in sangria are Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Riesling.

  • Sauvignon Blanc is crisp, acidic, and vibrant with flavors of citrus, tropical fruits, and herbs. It pairs well with a variety of fruits.
  • Pinot Grigio is a light and crisp white wine with subtle flavors of green apple, pear, and citrus. It works well for a delicate and subtle base for your sangria.
  • Riesling has a natural sweetness and can range from off-dry to sweet. It works well with stone fruits, honey, and floral notes, which can lend a slightly sweeter sangria.
  • Moscato is sweet and often slightly sparkling, which makes them popular for sweet sangrias.  Moscato has an intense fruity flavors with notes of peach, apricot, and orange blossom.

can i add juice to the sangria?

You can add juice to the sangria.  If you don’t want to add the orange liqueur you can add in orange juice instead.   You could also add in pineapple juice since you are using pineapple in this recipe and that would help to sweeten the sangria if that’s what you are looking for.

Before serving the sangria I skewered a few pieces of grilled pineapple and peaches for the garnish.   I like using a simple cocktail pick like these gold ones or these fun multi-colored ones.

I found that both pineapple and peaches pair well with white wines though they paired best with different types.   I went for a dry white wine because I thought it helped the sweetness of the fruit shine through.

More Sangria recipes:

This is such a light and crisp sangria.  It isn’t too sweet which is what my husband and I look for in sangria.   It’s fruity without being overbearing.

This is the perfect cocktail to sip on outside in the summertime.  The grilled fruit add a lot of flavor and I loved the couple pieces sitting on top of the sangria.   Since you can easily make a pitcher of it this is a great drink for parties and summer BBQ’s as well.
