I am a big fan of white wine. The cool, crisp flavors of white wine really speak to me and I enjoy sipping on it all year long. There are only a few red wines that I enjoy because I feel like they have more of an acidic taste to them. However, I do enjoy a great red wine cocktail or red wine sangria. Mixed with fruit juices and real fruit I think simply enhances the flavor of the red wine.
Since it’s Stone Fruit week I began looking at what stone fruits I could pair together with a great bottle of red wine. I kept thinking of cherries and I happen to have a pile of them in the refrigerator. I went back and forth on whether I should pair the cherries with peaches or plums but in the end peaches won out.
This Peach Cherry Sangria is a great late summer or fall sangria. If you want to serve it closer to the holiday it would be easy to warm it up with some spices like cinnamon and ginger but this version just has fruit in it. In addition to the peaches and cherries I used orange liqueur and peach nectar to give it additional flavor.
I mixed everything together and let it chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours. The longer the better with sangria because the fruit begins to release its juices into the wine and gives it more flavor. Make sure you have extra cherries and an extra peach to garnish the sangria glasses.
This sangria is fruity and delicious. The cherries really add a lot of flavor to the wine and the peaches add a more subtle flavor. I enjoy sipping on this one over ice while sitting on my back porch. It’s the perfect relaxing beverage.
