As you know I love making desserts. It’s totally my thing.  Whenever we are having people over, if we are going to someone’s house, or there is a party nearby, I’m always the one that’s called on to make the dessert.Â
I’m known for my cakes and one of my most impressive cakes is the Spring Watercolor Triple Layer Cake. I also make some great cupcakes and my Easy Butterscotch Cupcakes are a family favorite. However, I’m best known for my cookies. I make everything from bakery style Levain Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookies to unique cookies like my Lemon Basil Cookies with Mint.Â
I also make a mean pie.  However, I don’t love making pie crust because I find that it often cracks on me which is super frustrating. That’s why I like to use Wick’s Pies 9-inch dough circle sheet for all my pie dough needs.Â
I wanted to make something new and different because we had friends coming over. I thought some type of dessert pizza would be fun and different.Â
What is dessert pizza?
Dessert pizza is a sweet twist on traditional pizza. Instead of savory toppings like cheese and pepperoni, it’s made with a sweet crust and topped with ingredients like fruit, chocolate, frosting, caramel, cookies, nuts, or candy.
In this case I knew I wanted to make a caramel apple dessert pizza because I’ve had caramel apples on the brain.Â
I started with Wick’s Pies 9-inch dough circle sheet and spread a thin layer of chocolate hazelnut over top of the crust for my “sauce”.  I thought the nutty chocolate spread would pair nicely with the apples and the caramel.Â
I sliced my apples super thin and arranged them in two circles on top of the chocolate spread.  The outer circle held the larger pieces of the apple while the inner circle held the smaller pieces and overlapped the outer circle a bit.Â
How do you thinly slice apples?
The best way to do this is by using a sharp knife. Wash and dry the apple and cut into quarters.  Cut off the core then place the apple flat side up on a cutting board.  Slice into 1/8 inch thick slices.Â
Next an easy crumble topping is sprinkled over top of the apples and the dessert pizza is baked until it is golden brown. Once it comes out of the oven caramel sauce is drizzled over top of it.Â
Ingredients:
- Wick’s Pies 9-inch dough circle
- chocolate hazelnut spread
- apples
- salted butter
- all purpose flour
- old fashioned oats
- brown sugar
- cinnamon
- caramel sauce (homemade or store bought)
One thing to note is that the chocolate hazelnut spread can burn at this temperature in the oven so try to fully cover it with the apples. I also went light on the crumble topping because I wanted to see the pretty apple slices on the dessert pizza but you can add more if desired.Â
What type of apples are best for dessert pizza?
The best apples for dessert pizza are ones that hold their shape when baked and have a sweet and tart flavor. My favorites would be Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Fuji apples.Â
This dessert pizza is incredible.  The crust is crisp yet buttery. The hazelnut chocolate spread is rich and sweet then the apples are soft with a sweet and tart flavor.
I love the buttery crumble on top and the caramel drizzle brings all of the flavors together. It’s really the perfect bite and it’s great served with a cup of coffee or a tall glass of milk.
How do you store dessert pizza?
Store it in an air tight container or cover it with plastic wrap and store at room temperature for up to 2 days. Before eating you may want to reheat it in the oven or air fryer for just a few minutes.Â

Caramel Apple Dessert Pizza
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 Wick’s Pies 9-inch dough circle
- 3/4 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
- 3 apples thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup old fashioned oats
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 Tablespoons salted butter cut into small pieces
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Place the pie dough circle on a piece of parchment paper on a large cookie sheet.
- Spread the chocolate hazelnut spread on top of the pie dough circle, leaving 1/2 inch edge around the dough circle.
- Thinly slice the apples then arrange them in an outer circle with the larger pieces and in an inner circle with the smaller pieces. Slightly overlap each apple to make a lovely spiral pattern. Try to cover as much of the chocolate hazelnut spread as possible.
- In a small bowl combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the butter and mix with your fingers until it resembles coarse sand. Sprinkle over top of the apples.
- Bake for 23-27 minutes or until the apples have softened, the crust has browned, and the crumble topping has browned.
- Remove from oven and drizzle with caramel sauce.
- Cut into 12 pieces and serve.
