The past few years we’ve been on a champagne kick. I’m not sure where it came from but most of the time if we are going to have a drink it’s going to be champagne.  I like champagne because it tastes good, it’s festive, and hello, bubbles!
However, sometimes we don’t want to open up a bottle of champagne or we only want a single drink. This is when I become a mixologist.  I’m becoming quite famous for my impromptu cocktails on the weekends.  I like to buy the mini bottles of liquor at the liquor store and keep them in the pantry for these occasions. There are so many fun combinations to make.
While we are on the subject of stocking the pantry I always make sure we have soda, sparkling water, some type of juice, lemons, and limes.  These are the keys and the base to most good cocktails. We also usually have a bottle of rum, vodka, and tequila on hand.  With just these 8 simple ingredients I can make a pretty great cocktail.
This time around I pulled out a mini bottle of lemon vodka. I looked in the fruit bowl and I happen to have a few blood oranges and a grapefruit in the fruit basket so I thought a citrus cocktail would be pretty yummy. I ended up using the juice from the blood oranges and grapefruit in addition to the lemon vodka and triple sec.  It wasn’t sweet enough so I also added in a big of simple syrup.
The martini was really tasty. The citrus flavors made it tangy and the color was really pretty!  I used just enough simple syrup to give it a hint of sweetness. If you like your cocktails sweeter feel free to use more. Garnish with a few citrus wedges and you are ready to go!
