Let’s talk lunch. Whenever I’m at work my go to lunches are leftovers, a sandwich, school lunch, or a microwaveable meal. I only get 30 minutes on my lunch break and I’d say at least once a week I end up spending it with a student.
At home I have a lot more to to make and enjoy my lunches so I tend to make things that I wouldn’t make for work. One of my favorites to make is pizza in the air fryer like this Air Fryer Hatch Chile and Bacon Pizza. I’m also a huge fan of making Reubens. For a quick soup I enjoy a pot of Hot and Sour Soup. Of course I also make salads like this Big Mac Salad Bowl.
Today I was craving buffalo chicken. While my go to is buffalo chicken tenders, I thought I’d go with something a little different and pan fry some buffalo chicken sandwiches.
Do I have to Pan Fry the chicken?
No you can make this chicken a variety of ways. The quickest way would be to deep fry the chicken as it only takes a few minutes. You can also make it in the air fryer or in the oven but that takes a lot more time. I like this method of pan frying the chicken to get a nice, crunchy exterior then finished off the chicken in the oven. You can also pan fry the chicken until it’s finished but you have to make sure that the pieces of chicken are on the thinner side.
After some trial and error I found the best combination for the breading. Dredge the chicken in flour, dip in an egg wash, then dredge it in the flour again. It’s one that sticks to the chicken and can be coated in buffalo sauce.
I also found that a combination of pan frying the chicken then finishing it up in the oven is the best way to make the chicken crispy without deep frying. I find that two coatings of flour with the eggs in between makes for the crispiest outside of the chicken.
The sauce is simply made from hot sauce, butter, and garlic. You can use the hot sauce as it is packaged but I find adding the butter and garlic enhances the flavor of the sauce and really helps to elevate it.
What toppings can I put on a buffalo chicken sandwich?
Adding cheese such as blue cheese, Pepper Jack cheese, or sharp cheddar cheese would be delicious. Ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, garlic aioli, or guacamole are fun sauce toppings to put on top of the sandwich. As for veggies, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cole slaw, or grilled peppers are popular topping choices.
Ingredients:
- Boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- whole milk
- eggs
- garlic powder
- black pepper
- all purpose flour
- olive oil
- buffalo sauce (or your favorite hot sauce)
- salted butter (or unsalted if you prefer)
- garlic cloves
- Kaiser rolls (or another hearty roll)
- lettuce
- tomatoes
- blue cheese or ranch dressing
The chicken came out of the oven perfectly crispy. I tossed it with the buffalo sauce and then placed them on the buns. I added lettuce and ranch dressing to mine and lettuce, tomato, and blue cheese to my husbands.
These buffalo chicken sandwiches were delicious! The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sauce were perfectly spicy while the ranch dressing helped cool it off a bit.
What can I serve with Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches?
My personal favorite thing to eat with buffalo chicken sandwiches are french fries or tater tots. It’s also great served with onion rings, potato chips, cole slaw, celery and carrots with blue cheese dressing, potato salad, or corn on the cob.
No matter what you serve them with these Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches may be your new favorite sandwich! Plus, if you have a friend or family member who doesn’t like spicy foods you can simply add BBQ sauce or leave the chicken plain and have them add their own toppings tot he sandwich.
