A plate with Apple Jacks cereal treats piled high.

Every Halloween I start making treats as soon as October first hits.  I usually start out strong making all kinds of creative desserts that take a lot of time but by the end of October, when Halloween actually comes, I’m burnt out and usually go for the quick and easy treats.

A super easy no bake Halloween treat are these Halloween Haystacks.  These Raw Meat Halloween Rice Krispies Treats are so realistic and easy to make.

Easy Spider Cupcakes are made with a box mix and are fun for kids to decorate. Mummy Brownies have just 3 ingredients and can be made in a hurry.

I was looking for a recipe that wouldn’t require me to turn on the oven and one that had 5 ingredients or less.   Something that would be perfect for Halloween but wouldn’t take too much effort.

I decided to make cereal treats.   That most famous of all cereal treats is of course Rice Krispies Treats.  In fact, they are so popular you can even by them pre-made and individually wrapped.

What are Cereal Treats?

Cereal treats are snack or dessert bars made by combining cereal with a sweet, sticky marshmallows. The mixture is usually pressed into a pan, allowed to set, and then cut into bars.  It can be topped with sprinkles, nuts, or candies.

I thought about just buying Rice Krispies and using some food coloring to make them look like they were for Halloween but when I went to the store I had a ton of cereal choices!  The old school Count Chocula and Franken Berry were both tempting but I wanted something that was more than just one color.

I narrowed it down to the Halloween Fruit Loops and the Halloween Apple Jacks.   Since I’m not a fan of regular Froot Loops (all the different flavors are just way too much for me) I decided to go with the orange and green Apple Jacks with Halloween marshmallows.

What are Apple Jacks?

Apple Jacks is a popular breakfast cereal. It consists of sweetened, multigrain O-shaped pieces that taste like apple and cinnamon. The pieces are orange and green and have a bigger cinnamon flavor than anything else.

I made these cereal treats just like I do any other cereal treats.  Originally I thought about adding more cinnamon but after tasting the cereal I felt that it had a big enough cinnamon flavor.

Ingredients for making Apple Jacks cereal treats.

Ingredients:

  • Halloween Apple Jacks (or regular Apple Jacks will work)
  • mini marshmallows
  • butter (I prefer salted in this recipe)
  • Halloween sprinkles (optional but fun)

To make the cereal treats melt the butter in a large sauce pan over medium heat.   Once the butter has melted add the marshmallows and stir until melted.

Remove from heat and add in the cereal.  Stir until combined.  Spread the cereal mixture into a 9 x 13 baking dish sprayed with cooking spray.  Sprinkle with sprinkles if desired.

How do I keep the treats from sticking to my hands?

To put the treats into the prepared pan either spray your hands or a spatula with nonstick cooking spray.  Then pour the treats into the pan and use your sprayed hands or sprayed spatula and press the mixture into the pan so that it is even all the way around.

These cereal treats looked great!  The orange and green are perfect for Halloween and the sprinkles on top just added another pop of color.

I will warn you that these cereal bars are very sweet.   I think using the salted butter helps to tone the sweetness down a little.   They have the flavor of cinnamon and marshmallows which is a nice fall combination.

How do you store Halloween Cereal Treats?

I found my cereal treats to be pretty sticky.  I cut them into squares then placed them in an air tight container with pieces of parchment paper in between the layers so that they did not stick together. They should stay fresh for up to 1 week.
