In the summer I’m always looking for a refreshing way to quench my thirst.  Typically I either drink plain water or unsweetened iced tea.  They are my two go to beverages but sometimes I want something a little better and a little sweeter.

Most of the time that means I either make a flavored, lightly sweetened iced tea or homemade lemonade.  Both give me the flavor I’m looking for and I can control the sweetness in the drink.

I was recently gifted a collection of summer flavored loose leaf tea from Chariteas.  Chariteas offers a variety of unique blends. Their teas are exclusively sourced, crafted and uniquely designed for them and by them.

I received the Berries and Blooms Collection and if you like fruit flavored teas these are the best I’ve ever had.  They are so fruit forward and it’s real fruit flavor not that fake flavor.  I used Berry Fields Forever in this iced tea recipe.  It is crafted from ripe berries, black currants, sour cherries and hibiscus and has a gorgeous red color.

Ingredients:

  • Berry loose leaf tea
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Ginger
  • Lemon

To Make the Tea:  Heat the water, sugar, ginger, and lemon juice in a saucepan until it begins to simmer.   Pour into a cup and steep the tea for 5 minutes.   Strain the tea to get the tea leaves and ginger out.  Pour over top of ice and serve with lemon and berries.

This Berry Iced Tea is perfect for summer.  It’s light, it’s a little bit sweet, and it’s really refreshing.  Plus you can add berries to the actual drink to make it even better.

I also like making my own iced tea at home because I can add as much or a little sweetener as possible.  I don’t like my tea overly sweet so that’s perfect for me.

Can I use a different type of tea?

As long as your tea is some type of berry flavor it will work here.  While you can use tea in a tea bag I really prefer loose leaf tea because the flavor is more forward.   You can use a combination of berry and other fruit flavors or just pick a single flavor like raspberry or strawberry.

Can I use ground ginger?

No you cannot use ground ginger.   I would recommend either grating your own ginger or using fresh ginger that’s in a tube.  You can find this in the produce section of the supermarket.  It makes it nice because it’s already grated ginger and it stays fresh for a long period of time.

What is loose leaf tea?

Loose leaf tea uses whole leaves which produce the best flavor.  Tea bags often have the broken bits of tea and don’t have great results.  Loose leaf tea can be brewed by placing the leaves directly in hot water then straining out or you can use a tea ball or tea strainer

If I make a big batch how long will it keep?

You can definitely make a large batch of this iced tea.  Make up a large pitcher and keep in in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.   You can also make a big batch and have an iced tea station with slices of lemon and different types of berries for putting in the tea.

This iced tea is lovely.  It’s a little bit sweet, a touch tart from the berry tea, and the lemon and ginger just add an additional touch of flavor.

I added chopped strawberries to my iced tea but you could add lemon slices, raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries to the tea.   Garnish with your favorite berries or lemon slices.
