These scones are tender, buttery, and lightly sweetened. Each scone is golden on the outside with a soft, crumbly interior studded with rich chocolate chips. They are great for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon treat.

I am back at it with another scone recipe today!   While in my kitchen yesterday I realized I’ve never made a scone with chocolate chips before!

Now I’ve made plenty of fruit flavored scones including Rhubarb Scones and Grapefruit Scones.  I’ve made scones with vegetables in them like my Pumpkin Scones and Carrot Cake Scones.  I’ve even made savory Cheddar Zucchini Scones but I’ve never made chocolate chip scones.

What are Scones?

Scones are lightly sweetened, baked pastries from Scotland. Scones are made with flour, sugar, butter, milk, and baking powder. They can be flavored with fruits, extracts, or nuts. They are usually round or triangular in shape and they have a crumbly texture with a lightly sweetened taste. Scones are often served with butter or jam. They can also be topped with a glaze.

I actually used a bit of a different recipe for these scones.   I normally add fruit to my scones so that adds a lot of moisture to the dough.  Since I was just adding chocolate chips I realized I needed a base with more liquid in it.

I just happened to have some chocolate milk leftover in the refrigerator that I wanted to use up and I thought that making these scones would be a good way to do it.   I was a little concerned it would make them overly chocolatey but it didn’t.

Do I have to use chocolate milk?

No!  You can definitely use regular whole milk, low fat milk, or even plant based milk.  I simply used the chocolate milk because I had it and I knew we wouldn’t drink it on its own so this was a good way to use it up.

I used semi-sweet chocolate chips in the scones but you can us any type of chocolate chip.   Dark chocolate chips would be really yummy.   You can also use a combination of chocolate chip flavors.

Wooden cutting board with a cup of flour, a bag of chocolate chips, vanilla, a container of chocolate milk, a stick of butter, and baking powder.

Ingredients:

  • all purpose flour
  • granulated sugar
  • baking powder
  • salted butter (or unsalted if you prefer)
  • chocolate milk (or white milk if you prefer)
  • vanilla extract
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips

To make the scones preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, and baking powder.  Chop the butter into pieces and add to the dry ingredients.  Mix with your hands until just combined.   Add in the milk and vanilla extract and mix until just combined.  Fold in the chocolate chips.

A round of chocolate chip dough cut into 8 pieces.

Pat the dough into a circle.  Use a knife or pizza cutter and cut into 8 pieces.  Place them on a baking sheet 2-3 inches apart.  Bake for 15-18 minutes.  Remove from oven and cool.

These scones came out of the oven looking perfect.  They were brown on the bottoms and just lightly golden on top.

I broke one apart and it was a little firmer than the scones I usually make but it tasted great.   The chocolate chips gave the scones a rich, chocolate flavor and the scone itself was lightly sweetened and buttery.

I was surprised that if I hadn’t known there was chocolate milk in the batter I definitely wouldn’t know from the taste or color of the scones.

Can I add a glaze to chocolate chip scones?

I didn’t add a glaze because I felt that the chocolate chips sweetened the scones enough.  However, you could drizzle melted chocolate over top of them or drizzle a simple powdered sugar glaze on top.

Since these scones were a bit firmer than my regular scones I found them best to enjoy with a cup of coffee or glass of milk.  While I thought they were perfect as an after dinner treat I did also have them for breakfast a time or two as well.

How do I store scones?

Store the scones in an air tight container for up to 1 week.  They may start to get a little hard at the one week mark but you can dunk them in milk or coffee.   You can also wrap them in plastic wrap, put them in a freezer bag, and freeze them for up to six months.
