Pizza is a staple in our house.   Friday nights are our Italian night and we either have simple pasta, pizza, or a stromboli.   With both the stomboli and the pizza we use pizza sauce.

Once upon I time I would buy a specific pizza sauce but then forget about it and wouldn’t use it.   Many nights it’s just easier to grab a jar of marinara sauce since there’s usually one open in the refrigerator.   While there is nothing wrong with using marinara sauce, it isn’t made specifically for pizza.

What is pizza sauce?

Pizza sauce is a flavorful sauce used as a base for pizzas. It’s made from a base of tomatoes, but the ingredients and preparation methods can vary. The sauce is usually seasoned with a variety of herbs and spices to complement the toppings and the crust.

I used to only make pizza sauce when I had a large chunk of time because I use homegrown tomatoes that I cook for hours over the stove with herbs and spices.   I’ve decided that takes too long and there’s a much easier and just as delicious way to make pizza sauce at home.  This recipe uses canned tomatoes and tomato paste but makes up for it with fresh herbs.

I received a ton of basil in my CSA this past week so I used that along with parsley and oregano from my own garden.   A few garlic cloves got tossed in as well as fennel seed.

Can I use different herbs?

Of course!  If you have a garden go outside and pick whatever you have in the yard.   If you buy herbs get ones that you will use for other meals.  There is no need to only use the herbs I’ve mentioned.

Until recently I never would have used fennel seed but it’s really a great addition to pizza sauce.   Mixed it all up with salt and pepper and you have a delicious pizza sauce ready to go.  There’s no cooking required and the flavor is delicious.

Ingredients for making Pizza Sauce.

Ingredients:

  • diced tomatoes
  • fresh basil
  • fresh oregano
  • fresh parsley
  • garlic cloves
  • fennel seed
  • tomato paste
  • salt and pepper

Making this sauce is so easy.  Simply place the tomatoes in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.  Add in all the other ingredients and mix until smooth.  That’s it!

While many sauces require you to cook down the tomatoes in order to get a thick sauce this isn’t the case with this pizza sauce.  The more tomato paste you use the thicker your sauce will be.

I usually try and let the sauce sit in my refrigerator for a full day before using in order to let the flavor of the herbs infuse the sauce.   It keeps for about a week in the refrigerator but it never lasts that long in our house!

How do you store the sauce?

I usually either put it in a zip top bag or store it in a mason jar in the refrigerator.  The sauce will last up to one week.

Can you freeze this sauce?

Yes!  I often make a double batch and place half of it in a freezer bag to freeze for later.  It will last in the freezer for up to 6 months.

So what are you waiting for?  Give this sauce a try, it only takes 5 minutes to make and you’ll thank me later!
