I’ve been on a bit of a world tour with my meatballs lately.ย I’ve made the traditional Italian meatballs many times.ย Last month I finally got around to trying the North African meatballs which were out of this world!ย Then I made the Russian Meatball Stroganoff.ย So when I came across a recipe for Greek meatballs I thought, why not?
Soutzoukakia are similar to traditional meatballs and are usually served in a simple tomato based sauce over rice or mashed potatoes.ย I happened to have an abundance of grits so we had our meatballs over top of that.ย The basic meatball was juicy and tasty with the herbs and onions in them.ย The sauce was smooth and had just a hint of cumin in it.ย I spooned the meatballs and sauce over some cheesy grits which made the perfect base for this dish.

Olive oil
1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 c. water
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 t. cumin
1/4 t. sugar
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. pepper

3. Return the empty skillet to the stove and add in 1 tablespoon of olive oil.ย Add in the garlic and heat for 1 minute.ย Add in the tomato sauce, water, cumin, sugar, salt, andย pepper.ย Bring the mixture to a boil and add in the meatballs.
4.ย Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.ย Add in the corn starch mixture at the end.ย Serve over rice, potatoes, or grits.
The meatballs look super yummy.. can’t wait to try this out and make it for the family.
My husband is always on the lookout for a new meatball. I’m sending this recipe his way.
I have never served meatballs the “greek” way- on top of mashed potatoes. This looks great!!! I will have to try it!! Please don’t forget to link up to Foodie Friday! It should be open later today (even though it’s only Thursday).
These would be great in a sandwich too! You can freeze what you don’t use and pull them out as you need them.
Great recipe. Would you be happy to link in to my Meatball edition of Food on Friday? This is the link . Hope you are having a good week.
