Whenever I see Asian chicken lettuce wraps the filling is made up of one of two types of chicken. Sometimes I see ground chicken that is seasoned used as the filling. Other times I see chicken breast that is thinly sliced into strips used as the filling. Each have their own merits but I don't love a lettuce wrap with either of them.
When I came across The Best Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps I thought it was another lettuce wrap with ground chicken but it turns out I was wrong. Instead of ground chicken this recipe uses boneless chicken breast that is chopped into very small pieces. I was totally intrigued by this.
So I chopped up the chicken and then got to work whipping up the sauce. I honestly didn't even check the sauce recipe before I started so I wasn't surprised that I didn't have all the ingredients. No big deal though because I was sure I could find enough ingredients to make a tasty sauce.
I didn't have hoisin but surprisingly I did have oyster sauce. I also had some fish sauce but after combining the other ingredients I didn't feel like that would be my best bet so instead I just added in more soy sauce and a bit of brown sugar. It worked because the sauce was really good. It was a touch sweet, a little tart, and somewhat spicy. All together it was perfect with these lettuce wraps.
The chicken cooked up in little pieces which was perfect. I love how it absorbed a ton of the sauce. Once I put it on the lettuce wrap along with the green onions it not only tasted great but it looked really good too. I also put a bit of rice in the lettuce wraps because I prefer it in them instead of on the side.
I really loved these lettuce wraps and so did my husband. They were super tasty and the green onions on top add a fresh flavor along with the lettuce. I think I'm going to start chopping my chicken like this every time I make lettuce wraps!
