It doesn’t get much better then The Best Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps made with finely chopped chicken breasts and a delicious Asian sauce.
Whenever I see Asian chicken lettuce wraps the filling tends to be made up of two types of filling.ย ย Sometimes I see ground chicken that is seasoned used as the filling.ย Other times I see chicken breast that is thinly sliced into strips used as the filling.ย
While each of these have their own merits I don’t love a lettuce wrap with either of them.ย My current favorite lettuce wraps are Stir Fry Chicken Lettuce Wraps that are made with thinly sliced chicken.ย We also enjoy Sesame Chicken Lettuce Wraps which also have larger pieces of chicken.ย For a ground chicken recipe I go for Thai Larb Chicken Lettuce Wraps.
What are Chicken Lettuce Wraps?
Chicken lettuce wraps are a light and flavorful dish with cooked chicken, often seasoned and stir-fried with a variety of ingredients, is served inside large, crisp lettuce leaves. These wraps are typically used as an appetizer or a main dish and are popular in many cuisines, particularly in Asian-inspired cooking.
When I came across The Best Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps I thought it was another lettuce wrap using ground chicken but it turns out I was wrong.ย ย Instead of ground chicken this recipe uses boneless chicken breast that is chopped into very small pieces.ย
I liked the idea of using chicken breast that was chopped into small pieces instead of ground chicken or thinly sliced chicken breasts.ย I was thinking this type of chicken would have a lot of flavor with a better piece of chicken.
Can I use a protein other than chicken?
You can use several other proteins in this recipe.ย ย Try using pork loin or pork chops that are chopped into small pieces.ย You can also use ground beef in place of the chicken.ย For a vegetarian twist use firm tofu cut into small pieces.
One of the most important parts of making lettuce wraps is picking a good type of lettuce.ย My favorite type of lettuce for wraps is Bibb lettuce but it is a bit on the expensive side.
What type of lettuce can I use in these wraps?
I like to use Bibb lettuce because it’s a smaller size and the lettuce is really tender.ย ย For a large wrap using a firmer lettuce I tend to go for Romaine lettuce.ย You can also use red or green leaf lettuce if you want a lettuce that isn’t too firm or too soft.
Ingredients:
- honey
- soy sauce (I like to use low sodium because these can get salty)
- ketchup
- rice vinegar (white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar can also be used)
- Sriracha (or other hot sauce)
- garlic cloves
- oyster sauce (hoisin sauce can also be used)
- brown sugar
- boneless chicken breasts (or boneless chicken thighs)
- onion
- broccoli (optional)
- green onions
- ginger (fresh or already chopped)
- lettuce (Bibb or Romaine is preferred)
To make the sauce combine all sauce ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.ย Heat the olive oil in a large sauce pan and add in the onion, garlic, ginger, and broccoli.ย Saute for 3-4 minutes.ย Add in the chicken and saute for 3-5 minutes.
Pour the sauce over top of the chicken and vegetables and cook for 5 minutes.ย Place several tablespoons of chicken and vegetables in each lettuce cup and sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds.
I decided to make these wraps but I didn’t even check the sauce recipe before I started so I wasn’t surprised that I didn’t have all the ingredients.ย ย No big deal though because I was sure I could find enough ingredients to make a tasty sauce.
I didn’t have hoisin but surprisingly I did have oyster sauce.ย I also had some fish sauce but after combining the other ingredients I didn’t feel like that would be my best bet so instead I just added in more soy sauce and a bit of brown sugar.ย ย
Can I use other ingredients in my sauce?
Go for it!ย ย Make your sauce your own.ย Add the ingredients you have on the list and then add in any other ingredients you think might compliment the ones already in the sauce.ย ย Anything that is a little savory, a little sweet, a little sour, and a little spicy combined together into one sauce works really well.
It worked because the sauce ended up being really good.ย ย It was a touch sweet, a little tart, and somewhat spicy.ย All together it was perfect with these lettuce wraps.
The chicken cooked up in little pieces which was perfect.ย I love how it absorbed a ton of the sauce.ย ย Once I put it on the lettuce wrap along with the green onions it not only tasted great but it looked really good too.ย I also put a bit of rice in the lettuce wraps because I prefer it in them instead of on the side.
I really loved these lettuce wraps and so did my husband.ย They were super tasty and the green onions on top add a fresh flavor along with the lettuce.ย I think I’m going to start chopping my chicken like this every time I make lettuce wraps!
