One of my favorite things about fall is pumpkin.   As soon as the weather starts cooling off I begin looking for all the pumpkin drinks and food.

A favorite of mine is the pumpkin spice latte.  It’s the only time of year they serve them so it’s a big treat!  I really like the spicy flavor of the cinnamon with the pumpkin on a cool fall day.

What is a latte?

A latte is a popular espresso-based coffee drink.  The word latte means milk in Italian which makes total sense.  Typically a latte has espresso on the bottom and steamed milk, which is milk that has been heated and frothed to create a creamy and velvety texture, on the top.  Flavors can be added to the mixture to make a flavored latte.

I started stalking a local coffee shop at the beginning of September in hopes of getting a pumpkin spice latte early in the season but I didn’t have any luck.  Besides, I hate paying over five dollars for a latte when I can make them at home myself for a whole lot cheaper!

I decided to put a twist on my favorite fall beverage and make a Salted Caramel Pumpkin Latte.  I figured that caramel pairs so well with the pumpkin that this would be perfect.

ingredients:

  • whole milk (Whole milk makes a velvety texture for the drink.   Skim milk can be substituted as can plant based milk but your latte will not have the thickness to it)
  • pumpkin puree (This is what gives the latte its flavor.  Make sure you get pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling)
  • sugar (I typically use granulated sugar but it you want a richer, caramel flavor you can go for the brown sugar)
  • caramel sauce (homemade is best but I use store bought in a pinch)
  • sea salt (Sea salt works best in this case because it has a bolder flavor and you can sprinkle it on top)
  • pumpkin pie spice (This is the spice that enhances the pumpkin flavor.  You can buy it or make your own)
  • strong black coffee or espresso (Make sure if you are using coffee to make a strong brew because this is the base of your drink.  You can also use espresso)

Everything you need to make a Salted Caramel Pumpkin Latte

Luckily I had everything I needed at home last weekend to make this awesome beverage because it went from 90 degrees with a heat index of over 100 to 50 degrees, pouring down rain, and cold within 2 days.   Summer quickly changed to fall and I was chilled to the bone since it had been so hot the last few days. All I could think about was sipping on a pumpkin latte.

I heated some milk on the stove and added in the pumpkin puree, granulated sugar, caramel sauce, pumpkin pie spice, and sea salt.   I mixed it all together and let it simmer while I brewed a cup of strong black coffee.

How do I make Pumpkin Pie Spice?

If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice at home you can make it yourself.  It’s made with 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon allspice, and 1 teaspoon of ground cloves.   I realize not everyone has all of these in the cupboard.   If you don’t have all of these spices you can combine at least 3 of them together and get a similar flavor.

Once my coffee was brewed I hunted in the refrigerator and came up with a container of whipped cream.   You can’t have a latte without the whipped cream on top!

How do you serve the Caramel Pumpkin Spice Latte?

I like to serve lattes in clear mugs because then you can see the coffee and the toppings easily.  I like ones that have a wider base and a wider lip like these large coffee mugs.  Another great mug to use are these hand blown glass, double walled, dishwasher safe coffee mugs.

I poured the caramel pumpkin milk on top of the strong coffee in a mug and gently stirred it together.   It smelled amazing.

Then I topped it off with the whipped cream, caramel sauce, and just a hint of sea salt.  I actually have fun flavors of sea salt so I put a vanilla cardamom sea salt on top which worked perfectly but regular would do well too!

What can I do with the leftover pumpkin puree?

There are so many things you can do with leftover pumpkin puree!   I feel like I never use a whole can in my baking or cooking.  If you are looking for something sweet my Pumpkin Spice Coffee Cake is so good or try these Pumpkin Cranberry Muffins.  If you want another tasty drink then try this Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate recipe.  Would you rather have a savory dish?  These Pumpkin Rolls are perfect with my Ravioli with Pumpkin Sauce.

The addition of the caramel to the pumpkin latte was awesome. It added some sweetness to the spiciness and just pulled it all together.   The salt on top cut through the sweetness and was perfection.

I was able to make two lattes with this recipe for a fraction of the cost of one latte at a coffee shop!  It warmed me up from the inside out and made me a happy camper.
