Fall is here and that means it’s apple season!ย ย ย  I love seeing all the colorful apples in the market or going to an orchard to pick my own.ย

Apples are so versatile and can be used in sweet or savory recipes.ย  One of my favorite sweet apple recipes is Caramel Apple Dump Cake which is super easy to make.ย  I can’t get enough of this Bourbon Apple Butter on my toast and muffins. For breakfast I love these Apple Pie pop tarts.

I’ve also made some savory apple recipes like this Apple and Chestnut Stuffing which pairs well with turkey or chicken. For lunch I love making this Apple and Gouda Grilled Cheese.ย  Apple Cheddar Scones are great to serve with dinner.

One thing I don’t have a lot of are apple side dishes.ย ย  I just haven’t come across any that sound like something I want to make.

Then I remembered the Cinnamon Fried Apples that you can get as a side dish at Cracker Barrel.ย ย  They are served warm and are so delicious.

What are fried apples?

Fried apples are a dish made by cooking sliced apples in a pan with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. The apples are sautรฉed until they become tender and caramelized. Fried apples are often served as a side dish, dessert, or a topping. The dish has a warm, sweet, and spiced flavor.ย  It is a popular comfort food, especially in the southern United States.

The best part about fried apples is that it only has 5 ingredients and takes just 20 minutes to make.ย  These means it can be made just about anytime!

What type of apples are best for fried apples?

You can use whatever type of apple you like best in fried apples.ย  I will say that I personally like to use a Granny Smith apple or Braeburn because they have a tart flavor that works really well with the sweetness of the fried apples.ย ย  However, if you like a sweeter apple Honeycrisp or Gala apples work well because they are firmer and will hold their shape.

Now for the big debate; should you peel the apples?ย ย  This is really up to you.ย  I know that if you get fried apples in a restaurant they are usually peeled.ย  However, I prefer to leave the skin on my apples for texture and the nutrients.ย  It’s really your choice as they work either way.

Remove from heat and serve warm.

The apples are sweet and slightly spiced from the cinnamon.ย  They are soft but still hold their shape.ย  They are perfect for serving with pork or ham.

How can I serve Fried Apples?

Fried apples can simply be served in a dish on the side of a main entree like pork or ham.ย ย  You can also use it as a topping for vanilla ice cream.ย  I personally love to put it on top of my Old Fashioned Pancakes.ย  You could also use it as a filling in crepes or cupcakes.ย
