Champagne and sparkling wine are probably my favorite things to drink.   I love the bubbles in the glass and the feeling that I’m celebrating something even when I’m not.

While I usually prefer to drink my bubbly on its own, sometimes it’s nice to have it in a simple cocktail.  I’m not talking about a drink with multiple liquors and juices and garnishes.  I like a simple cocktail with champagne and one or two other flavors so that I can actually taste the champagne.

Since this cocktail uses fresh cranberries it’s most often enjoyed in the winter.  It’s perfect for holiday parties and even New Year’s Eve.

To Make the Cocktail:  Pour the cranberry juice cocktail into a champagne glass.   Squeeze in a wedge of lime.   Top with champagne or sparkling wine.  Garnish with a lime wedge and fresh cranberries.

Whenever I make this cocktail for myself I usually throw in a few fresh cranberries and a wedge of lime for garnish.  If I’m making these cocktails for a party I like putting a sprig of rosemary in the glass along with sugared cranberries.

While I prefer a dry champagne many people like their champagne and cocktails sweeter.  If that’s the case you can make this with Prosecco instead of champagne.

What’s the difference between Champagne and Sparkling Wine?

The easy answer is that sparkling wine can only be called Champagne if it’s from the Champagne region of France.  This means all Champagne must come from France.  Most champagnes are made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes.

What type of sparkling wine or champagne should I use?

I prefer a dry sparkling wine so I often go with a Brut or Cava.  Some of my favorite cheaper but good sparkling wines that would be good in this cocktail are Mailly Brut Reserve Grand Cru (a true champagne at a decent price), Segura Viudas Brut (a great price for a decent sparkling wine), or Josh Cellars Prosecco for a sweeter option.

Can I use something besides cranberry cocktail?

You can use pomegranate juice in place of the cranberry cocktail.  You could also use cherry juice in place of it.  Something that’s a little bit tart and red to keep the color will work best in this cocktail.

I usually make this champagne cocktail to order since it doesn’t require a lot of prep work.   If you are having this at a party you can have champagne glasses that already have the cranberry juice and squeeze of lime in them and have a bucket of champagne chilling nearby that your guests can just pour into the glass.

I also find that having a garnish station nearby is fun and festive.  Place fresh cranberries, sugar cubes, rosemary sprigs, lime wedges, and pomegranate arils in bowls near the champagne glasses for your guests.
