Dill Dip is a creamy and herbaceous homemade dip made with fresh dill and other herbs that is perfect for dipping your favorite vegetables, chips, pretzels, or bread.

I am one of those people that likes to snack on something in the middle of the day.  I generally prefer salty or savory snacks and something that is crunchy.

When I have chips, pretzels, or vegetables I like to have some type of dip to go with them.  It not only gives the items more flavor, it’s fun to dip as well!

One of my new favorite dips is Dill Pickle Dip because it has a nice tang to it from the pickles.  I also make a flavorful Mediterranean Layered Dip that’s great with pita bread or tortilla chips. Of course I also make a mean Buffalo Chicken Dip

Since it’s summer I always have a large herb garden growing in our backyard.  We’ve had chives that just keep coming back year after year and this year our dill is growing really well.

What is Dill?

Dill is an herb that has feathery leaves and a distinctive taste.   It tends to add a nice brightness to dishes. When selecting fresh dill, look for vibrant green fronds with no signs of wilting or yellowing. In this receipt the dill provides an aromatic flavor that is the star of this dip.

I went outside and clipped some of the chives and the dill.  I also had a lot of parsley growing so I clipped some of that for my dip as well.

The base of this dip is both sour cream and mayonnaise.  I like the combination of both because it creates a balance of creamy and tangy.

To the base I added the chopped herbs, salt and pepper, garlic powder, and lemon juice.  The lemon juice adds a nice brightness to the dip.

What can I serve with the dip?

My favorite thing to serve with this dip is vegetables like carrots, celery, or broccoli.   It’s also really good with a crisp potato chip or tortilla chip.  You can also serve it with crackers, pretzels, or pieces of bread.

Mayonnaise, lemon juice, alt, pepper, garlic powder, fresh parsley, and fresh dill on a cutting board

Ingredients:

  • sour cream (this adds a tanginess to the dip)
  • mayonnaise (this adds a creaminess to the dip; use full or reduced fat)
  • fresh dill
  • fresh chives
  • fresh parsley
  • garlic powder (or you can use garlic salt and omit the salt in the recipe)
  • salt (I like using sea salt)
  • black pepper
  • fresh lemon juice (or bottled if that is what you have)

To make the dip simply combine all the ingredients together and mix well.  Chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Do I have to chill the dip before serving?

Yes.  It is advisable to chill the dip before serving so that the flavors of the fresh herbs get into the sour cream and mayonnaise base.  Chilling the dip will allow all of the flavors to meld in a symphony of flavors.

This dip is so fresh and flavorful.   While it was dill forward I could also taste the chives and the brightness from the lemon juice.

The dip is great in the summer because of the fresh herbs.  Serve it with raw vegetables for the ultimate summer appetizer.

How can I use the leftover dip?

Dill dip is great on sandwiches or wraps!   Instead of using ranch or mayonnaise, spread the Dill dip on your lunch wraps. You can also thin the dip out with a little milk or water and use as a salad dressing.
