Once the weather starts getting colder I immediately start looking for ways to warm up. I get cold easily so I often dress in layers with a hooded sweatshirt on top. I also can be found drinking a variety of warm beverages to help warm me from the inside out.
My favorite hot beverages are tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, While I go to my local coffee shop whenever I want a fancy coffee drink, I like to make my own fancy hot chocolate at home. It’s so easy to make homemade hot cocoa but I don’t know many people that actually do it.
I recently received several bars of chocolate from Forte Chocolates. They came in some amazing flavors like Aztec Soul which is chili pepper in dark chocolate, Orange Jazz which is dark chocolate with orange essence, and Lemon Pepper in White Chocolate. With so many amazing flavors I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to work with first.
The Forte Orange Jazz ended up as the winner. I thought Orange Spiced Hot Cocoa sounded amazing and I just had to make it. The great news is that there are only 4 ingredients in this recipe plus the topping. Why buy hot cocoa packets or order it out when it’s so easy to make at home?
I combined milk, the chocolate bar, sugar, and cinnamon in a pot and brought it to a simmer. That’s it! It’s that easy to make homemade hot cocoa. Of course I had to fancy it up a little more so after I poured it into my mug I topped it with whipped cream and orange zest.
The flavor in this hot cocoa was amazing. The rich dark chocolate and orange essence really shown threw. There’s just a hint of spice from the cinnamon but it really helps to bring out the orange. I sipped on this mug of hot cocoa all morning long and it really was a special treat!
