I was first introduced to the Moscow Mule five or six years ago at a blog conference.   I was leery about trying it because it was made with ginger beer and I hate beer.  I decided to give it a try because it sounded good and I’m glad I did!

Since that first sip I’ve had many other Moscow Mules.   While the original remains one of my favorites I’ve made several other flavor combinations as well.  It turns out that ginger beer isn’t really beer at all which might be why I really enjoy this drink.

With winter here I wanted to make myself a few mules.   My husband enjoys them as well and they are perfect for enjoying in front of the fire on a cold night.  The ginger gives the drink enough spiciness to really warm you up. So I decided on a Pomegranate Mule.

Ingredients:

  • ginger beer
  • pomegranate juice
  • lime juice
  • vodka
  • pomegranate arils
  1.  Fill a tall glass with ice.   Add in the pomegranate juice, lime juice, and vodka.
  2.  Pour the ginger beer over top to fill the glass.  Stir to combine.
  3.  Add a few pomegranate arils to the glass and a slice of lime on the rim of the glass.

I love how easy Mules are to make.  You basically toss some ice in a glass and pour everything over top of it and give it a stir.

Traditionally Moscow Mules were served in copper cups and in many bars this is still the case.   The copper stays ice cold so that the drink stays icy cold as well.  However, any cup or glass can be used in this case.

What is a Moscow Mule?

A Moscow Mule is a popular cocktail that is made with a combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.   That is the classic flavor and the most popular.  It’s usually garnished with a slice of lime.  Traditionally they are served in a copper mug which keeps the beverage ice cold.

What the heck is a pomegranate aril?  Can you eat it?

The pomegranate aril is simply the seed pod inside of a pomegranate.  It’s a clear, reddish fruit that surrounds a tiny, crisp seed, and the entire thing is edible.  I know that I use them a lot for decoration and in this cocktail I sprinkle in a few for effect but I actually enjoy the crunch and flavor of the aril.

What is ginger beer?

That’s a great question.  I actually didn’t know the answer until I started drinking Moscow Mules.   Ginger beer can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic.  In this recipe you can use either as you are going to be adding vodka as well so it will still be a cocktail either way.  I prefer the flavor in the alcoholic ginger beer but I’ve used the non-alcoholic version as well.

Way back in the late 1800s, ginger beer was a popular drink to sip in England. Back then, it was an alcoholic beverage, like hard cider.  Today many ginger beers are a non-alcoholic beverage with a spicy and aromatic flavor. It’s made with a combination of ginger, water and sugar that’s fermented with yeast, and then it’s carbonated and bottled.

This Pomegranate Moscow Mule is certainly tasty.  It has sweetness from the pomegranate juice, a tartness from the lime juice, and a spiciness from the ginger beer.  I ended up using berry vodka to give it more of a berry flavor but you can use plain old vodka here too.

While it’s a cold cocktail it warmed me up from the inside and was the perfect beverage to consume on a cold winter evening.  Because of it’s color it’s also a great Valentine’s Day cocktail!  We’ll be having many more of these this winter!
