This week has been full of both cold and snow.  Normally I like to go outside and play in the snow but when the windchill is down below zero it’s hard to get me outside.

I’ve been looking for fun activities to do that involve snow and cold and Snow Ice Cream has been high up on the list.

What is snow ice cream?

Snow ice cream is a simple and old-fashioned winter treat made by mixing clean snow with milk, sugar, and vanilla.  The snow acts like instant ice, turning the mixture into a soft, scoopable dessert similar to ice cream.

Now I’m no stranger to homemade frozen treats. I frequently make ice cream like this No Churn Blueberry Ice Cream and No Churn Coffee Caramel Ice Cream.   I also make fun frozen desserts like Frozen S’mores or Frozen Strawberry Breakfast Pops

The thing that’s different about Snow Cream is that it’s made with fresh fallen snow and 3 other ingredients that are found in most households.  Then you can finish it off with sprinkles, caramel or chocolate sauce, or fresh fruit if you prefer.

How do I get fresh snow?

The best way to get fresh snow is to put out a bowl when you know it’s going to snow.  That way you catch the fresh snow falling from the sky and there is no contamination.  However, you can also scoop snow from the top of an untouched pile if you are fairly certain it isn’t tainted.

A bowl of snow, a cup of milk, a bowl of sugar, and vanilla.

Ingredients:

  • fresh snow
  • whole milk (you can use low fat milk as well)
  • granulated sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • sprinkles (optional)
  • caramel or chocolate sauce (optional)

To make the ice cream put the snow in a large, cold bowl.  Add in the milk, sugar, and vanilla.   Mix well for 2-3 minutes.  If needed add in more milk, sugar, or vanilla.   Mix until desired consistency is reached.   Scoop into a bowl and top with sprinkles and caramel or chocolate sauce.

The snow ice cream was surprisingly tasty.   It was cold, sweet, and a bit creamy.   It was lightly flavored with vanilla.

How to trouble shoot problems with the snow cream:

  • If your snow cream is too dry add some additional milk and keep stirring until you reach the desired consistency.
  • If your snow cream isn’t sweet enough add another tablespoon of sugar.
  • Not enough flavor?  Pour in some more vanilla!
  • Snow ice cream too soft?  Either add a bit more snow or put the snow cream back in the freezer for 30 minutes before scooping.

I like topping the snow cream with sprinkles and some type of sauce on top.  I prefer caramel but I know others prefer chocolate.  You can use strawberry sauce as well.

What other toppings are good on the Snow Cream?

Anything you eat on ice cream you can eat on snow cream!  Nuts, real fruit, whipped cream, or cherries are all fun toppings.

Once you scoop out the portion you are going to eat, place the remaining snow ice cream in the freezer.  It will last up to 3 days in a freezer bag or air tight container in the freezer.
