Juicy, tender steak piled over crisp greens and topped with golden fries, all drizzled with a sweet and savoy soy vinaigrette. It’s the perfect balance of fresh, hearty, and totally crave worthy.

Summer time means the farmer’s market and all the fresh vegetables.   I love walking to the farmer’s market and checking out the produce.

Last week there was an abundance of lettuce so I got romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and a mixed bag of lettuce.   I couldn’t wait to get home and make a big salad.

I make a lot of entree salads and my recent favorite are Thai Beef Salads but they have a lot of parts to them so I don’t make them too often.  My husband’s favorite big salad is a Cobb Salad with homemade dressing.  I’m also partial to the Strawberry Pecan Salad during strawberry season.

I decided that I wanted to make a steak salad.  Usually I make steak salads when we’ve grilled a London Broil because we always have a ton left over but I knew we had a few sirloin steaks in the freezer so I figured those would work just as well.

Now, I love my steak and chicken salads with French fries on them.   I think it comes from living in Pittsburgh.  So many restaurants serve their salads with fries on them.   Have you ever had fries on your salad?   It’s delicious!

DO I have to add fries to my salad?

Of course not!  However, if you’ve never tried fries on your salad now is the time to do it.   It adds weight to the salad making it more filling plus it’s just really tasty with both chicken or steak.

I used a combination of lettuce to make a bed of mixed greens for our salads.  Then I took an onion, a red pepper, and some broccoli to go along with the lettuce.

Can I add other veggies?

Feel free to make your favorite salad base for this one.  Add carrots, celery, radishes, zucchini, or whatever other vegetables you enjoy with your lettuce.  I just used what I had on hand and what I normally use.

Next I marinated my steak.  It only needs to marinate for about 30 minutes but you can leave it for up to 8 hours or overnight.   While you don’t have to marinade it, it really gives the meat a nice flavor.

I also made a soy vinaigrette that I thought would pair well with the marinade of the steak.  They have a lot of similar flavors.   Plus, it’s super easy to make your own dressing for this steak.

Can I make a different dressing?

Sure!  If you want to make your own vinaigrette start with a vinegar and olive oil and build it from there.  You can add fruit, spices, soy sauce, teriyaki, mustard, or a variety of other ingredients to build the perfect dressing for your salad.

A cutting board with soy sauce, rice vinegar, hot sauce, olive oil, brown sugar, and paprika on it.

Ingredients:

  • mixed greens
  • onion
  • bell pepper (any color will work)
  • broccoli
  • cheddar cheese (or your favorite type of cheese)
  • croutons
  • steak (you can use London Broil, sirloin, flank steak, etc)
  • French fries (your favorite type)
  • olive oil
  • rice vinegar (apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar would work too)
  • soy sauce
  • brown sugar
  • spicy garlic sauce (or Sriracha)
  • paprika

To make the base of the salad combine the mixed greens, onion, broccoli, and bell pepper in a bowl.   Cover and refrigerate.   Combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, Sriracha, honey, and garlic cloves in a bowl. Add the steak and marinate for 30 minutes.

To make the dressing combine the olive oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, spicy garlic sauce, and paprika.  Shake well to combine and refrigerator.

Saute the steak in a medium pan over medium heat.  Cook until the temperature reaches 135 degrees.   Cut into strips.  Meanwhile, cook the fries according to the package directions.   Assemble the salads and enjoy.

The salad ended up being very tasty, fresh, and filling.  The fries and steak gave it the “meat” it needed to fill us up.  It was perfect as an entree salad.

It’s nice because you can change the ingredients in the salad base, the type of fries, and a few of the ingredients in the dressing and it makes a totally different salad every time.
