Sweet and Salty Popcorn

I’ve been trying to make a few snacks that are both sweet and salty. Usually it involves pretzels and chocolate or chips and white chocolate.
I went looking in my cupboard to see what I had and I went right to the popcorn. I’ve been on a gourmet popcorn kick lately and this was right up my alley.
What type of popcorn should I use in this recipe?
You can use either microwave popcorn or your can pop your own from kernels. I wouldn’t use a bag of already popped corn from the grocery store though. If you do use microwave popcorn make sure it doesn’t have a ton of butter on it. A little butter works but movie theater or double butter isn’t great in this recipe.
My favorite popcorn recipe is BBQ Popcorn which is made with homemade barbecue spice. I also enjoy the savory Garlic Parmesan Popcorn. For a sweet option Nutella Marshmallow Popcorn with M&M’s in it is so tasty.
I saw a small bag of peanuts and some mini pretzels and thought those would be the perfect salty addition to this popcorn recipe. You can also use pretzel sticks that are broken into small pieces.
For the sweet I used M&M’s and a drizzle of white chocolate. I liked the look of the white chocolate and the sweetness.
Can I add other things to this popcorn snack mix?
Of course! You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate for the drizzle instead of the white chocolate. For salty additions you could use cashews, pretzel Goldfish, or cheese crackers. Other sweet items you can use are chocolate chips, Reese’s pieces, marshmallows, or toffee bits.
Ingredients:
- popcorn
- sea salt
- butter (only if you make your own popcorn; microwave popcorn will already have butter on it)
- salted peanuts (or you can use almonds or cashews)
- mini pretzels (or larger pretzels broken into pieces)
- M&M’s
- white chocolate (or your preferred flavor of chocolate)
Combine the popcorn, sea salt, and butter. Toss to combine and lay out on a cookie sheet. Add the peanuts, pretzels, and M&M’s. Toss to combine. Drizzle with white chocolate and let sit for 30 minutes. Break into pieces and serve.
I love the sweet and salty flavor of this popcorn! The white chocolate is uber sweet while the M&M’s have a nice richness to them. The salted pretzels and peanuts add a nice crunch and the popcorn ties everything together.
How do you store this popcorn?
Store in an air tight container for up to 5 days. Try to keep out of humid areas or it won’t last as long.
