Cheddar Beer Bread is an easy to make and hearty bread that’s made with beer, cheddar cheese, and seasonings.  It’s delicious with pasta, soup, or on its own!

Last night I wanted to make soup for dinner.  The only problem with making soup is I never want to make anything too heavy to go with it.  I thought of a salad or dinner rolls but neither sounded very appealing.

I then thought of making a quick bread.   I’ve made a lot of quick breads but most of them have been sweet quick breads.

What is Quick bread?

Quick bread is a type of bread that is made with something other than yeast.  Common leavening agents used in quick breads include baking powder and baking soda. This lets the bread be prepared quickly without having proofing and rising times like traditional bread. Quick breads can be sweet or savory. They are easy to prepare as you just have to mix and bake.

My favorite quick bread is a delicious Cherry Almond Quick Bread.  For something fun you can’t be Bananas Foster Bread with rip bananas, brown sugar and rum.  Then the best banana bread is Butterscotch Brown Butter Banana Bread.

Of course none of those would work with soup.   So I started thinking of savory quick bread recipes.

I looked for a recipe on my blog and found an awesome Jalapeno Cheddar Bread but it has yeast so it needed to rise and I didn’t have the time.  I also have a Caramelized Onion Cheddar Bread with the same issue.  I decided I needed a cheddar beer bread.

What type of beer do you use in Cheddar Beer Bread?

This depends on what you like.  I’m not a big beer fan so I went with a light beer.   If you have a favorite beer use it!   If you want a deeper flavor use a lager.   Seriously, use what you like or have on hand.  I usually just grab whatever we have in our beverage refrigerator and use that.

Quick Cheddar Beer Bread

I wanted a simple recipe that didn’t have an overwhelming beer taste.  I found several recipes but didn’t love any of them so I just combined a bunch of my own quick bread recipes into this one!

Ingredients:

  • all purpose flour
  • granulated sugar (this helps tone down the beer flavor)
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • garlic cloves
  • beer (I use a light beer but use your favorite type)
  • cheddar cheese (or your favorite kind of cheese)
  • salted butter (or unsalted if you prefer)

To make the bread preheat the oven to 375 degrees.   Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.   Mix well.   Slowly add in the beer and mix until well combined.

Add in the garlic cloves and cheddar cheese and mix well.   Pour the batter into the loaf pan and spread so that the top is smooth.

Bake for 30 minutes.  Meanwhile, melt the butter and pour it over top of the bread.   Return the bread to the oven and continue baking for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and cool for 10 minutes.   Remove the bread from the pan and cool on a wire rack completely.

The beer bread was really yummy, especially with my soup.  The taste of the beer in the bread was distinct but not overpowering.  The cheddar cheese is sharp and adds a delicious flavor.

This is a hearty bread and also works well with pasta.   We also have sliced it and used it for grilled cheese and it works wonderfully due to the cheese in the bread.

How do you store Cheddar Beer Bread?

Cover the bread with plastic wrap or foil and store on the counter for up to 5 days.   You can also put it in a large zip top bag.

Can you freezer Cheddar Beer Bread?

You certainly can!   Wrap the entire loaf in plastic wrap and then wrap in foil.  Place in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 6 months.   When ready to use defrost it on your counter.
