Grilled cheese is one of those foods that I can eat almost any time.   We often have it for lunch when there’s nothing else to eat because we always have cheese and bread.

Usually we make our grilled cheese in a skillet on the stove top.  It’s easy and cooks up quickly.  If I’m making another dish along with it the problem is that it can go from golden to burnt in seconds.

Why you should make air fryer grilled cheese:

Air fryer grilled cheese is easy to make and it’s a great way for kids to make a hot sandwich that doesn’t have to go over a flame on the stove top.  The bread toasts up nicely and the cheese melts perfectly.

When I’m making a grilled cheese I think about two main things.  The first thing to think about is the bread.  I like a bread that’s hearty enough to stand up to melted cheese without being soggy.

You also want a bread that toasts well.  Not all breads toast in the same way.  The thickness of the bread is important as well.

What type of bread works well for a grilled cheese?

Sourdough is a great choice because it stays sturdy at the crust but soft on the inside.  French bread is another good option because it is chewy and soft with a firm crust.  Whole grain breads add a heartiness and extra flavor to grilled cheese.   Lastly, a good, sturdy white bread can be great for a grilled cheese, especially for kids.

The other most important part of the grilled cheese is the cheese itself.   While a classic grilled cheese uses American cheese, there are so many amazing types of cheese that can be used.  Whether you use a single cheese or a combination is another decision to make.

What type of cheese works best for a grilled cheese?

The best cheese for a grilled cheese is any cheese that melts well.  American cheese is a classic that melts like a dream.  Sharp cheddar melts well and will stand up to any type of bread.  Swiss cheese has a nutty flavor and melts well and can be paired with vegetables in a grilled cheese. Mozzarella is a fun and mild cheese that can be used in a grilled cheese and served with marinara dipping sauce.  Other favorites include Havarti, Gouda, and Monterey Jack cheeses.

I’ve made many different types of grilled cheese sandwiches in the past.  Pizza Grilled Cheese has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid.  For a more grown up sandwich try Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese.  I really love the Three Cheese Garlic Gourmet Grilled Cheese because it looks like a classic grilled cheese with a twist. There are even dessert grilled cheese sandwiches like this Strawberry French Toast Grilled Cheese.

For my grilled cheese I went with a thicker white bread and two types of cheese.   I had a white American cheese and a sweet cheddar slice as well.  The creamy American cheese paired nicely with the sweet cheddar.

Ingredients for making an Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Ingredients:

  • sandwich bread (your favorite type)
  • sliced cheese (choose one or two of your favorite types)
  • butter (I like using salted butter)

To make the grilled cheese sandwiches butter both sides of the sandwich bread.  If your butter is cold you need to bring it to room temperature or heat it for 10 seconds in the microwave so that it’s easy to spread.

Lay two pieces of bread, butter side down, in the air fryer basket.  Top each piece with 2 pieces of cheese.   Top with the remaining two pieces of bread, butter side up.

Cook the grilled cheese at 375 degrees for three to four minutes on one side then flip and cook for three to four minutes on the other side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.   Remove from the air fryer and serve warm.

This grilled cheese was delicious.  The bread was buttery and crispy golden brown while the cheese was melted to perfection.  It was an easy way to make a grilled cheese and would be easy for kids to make.
