Lately I’ve been on a kick of finding viral recipes and making them for myself.   While a lot of these recipes are on social media, some are just popular because of their flavor profile.

One of the first “viral” recipes I ever made was the Baked Feta Pasta which turned out to be easy and delicious. Last holiday season I made a version of the TikTok Cinnamon Rolls using eggnog instead of heavy cream. Currently pandan in one of the hottest flavors around and I made these easy Pandan Cool Whip Cookies.

Over the last few months I’ve been seeing a lot of different recipes for pasta chips.  While I love pasta and could eat it just about every day, I wasn’t sure how I felt about pasta chips.

What are pasta chips?

Pasta chips are a crispy snack made by cooking pasta, seasoning it, and then baking, air frying, or frying it until crunchy. They became especially popular as a social media trend because they’re easy to make and perfect for dipping.

I decided to air fry my pasta chips because I figured it would take less time to make them and I love my air fryer. While there are so many different types of air fryers, and I’ve had 4 or 5 different types, I love the Ninja air fryer with it’s large surface area and the fact that it folds up to save space on the counter.

Now let’s talk about the pasta chips.  The most important thing is to choose a shape that works for the chips.  This means using a bigger shape that you can pick up and dip if you’d like.

What pasta should I use?

The best pasta shapes to use for pasta chips are bow ties, rotini, penne, or rigatoni.  While you can use lasagna noodles broken into pieces or shells, the other shapes are your best bet.

To make the chips you first cook your pasta according to the package directions.  Then toss the drained pasta with olive oil.  Season with spices, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese and place in a single layer on a baking tray or a piece of parchment paper.

Air fry for about 15 minutes or until the pasta has browned and is crispy.  It may take longer or shorter depending on your air fryer, how many noodles you have in the air fryer, and the pasta shape.

Can I bake them in the oven?

Sure you can!  Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and bake for 20-30 minutes on a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray. The cooking time will depend on how many pasta chips you are making at one time.

Once they come out serve with marinara sauce, guacamole, or sour cream dip.  You can even just snack on them as they are without any dip.

A bottle of olive oil, a bag of pasta, a bunch of containers of seasonings.

Ingredients:

  • Pasta (I used bow tie pasta which worked really well)
  • olive oil
  • garlic powder
  • paprika
  • oregano
  • black pepper
  • salt
  • red pepper flakes
  • parmesan cheese
  • dipping sauce

The pasta chips turned out pretty well.  Most of them were crispy though I did have to put a few back into the air fryer because they were chewy.

I loved the flavor of the chips.  They were savory and a little spicy and packed a ton of flavor from the parmesan cheese.

I served mine with marinara sauce which tasted great with the seasonings that I used on the pasta chips.   While pasta is Italian, you can use other seasonings and dipping sauces to change it up a bit.

What other seasoning and sauces could I use?

If you want a Mexican flavor you can toss the chips with cumin, chili powder, garlic, and paprika.  Serve with salsa or guacamole.   For an Asian flare use garlic powder, ginger, Chinese 5 spice, salt, and sesame oil instead of olive oil.  Serve with Yum Yum sauce or spicy mayo.

While these chips are best served fresh out of the air fryer you can make them a day or two in advance and then refresh them in the air fryer for a few minutes before serving.

how do you store Pasta Chips?

Store the pasta chips in an air tight container or a plastic bag on the counter.  If they lose their crispness simply air fry for 2-3 minutes before serving.
