Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats are a spooky spin on a classic! Made with green Rice Krispies, gooey marshmallows, black candy melt “hair,” and candy eyes they’re frightfully fun and monstrously delicious! Perfect for Halloween parties, classroom treats, or to snack on at home.
Rice Krispies Treats have been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. They were something that we only got as a treat and we could help make them too.
As an adult I like them just as much as I did as a kid. I’m not a huge fan of the already made prepackaged ones. The ones I make myself are so much better.
Since Halloween is coming I wanted to make a fun treat to celebrate. I was a little tapped out on baked goods so I didn’t want to make anything that was going to take too long. So I saw these Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats and knew they would be fun and easy to make.
Ingredients:
- Rice Krispies
- mini marshmallows
- butter
- green food coloring
- black candy melts or dark chocolate chips
- candy eyes
To Make the treats: Heat the butter and mini marshmallows in a large saucepan over medium high heat. Stir until the marshmallows have melted. Mix in the green food coloring then remove from heat. Stir in the Rice Krispies. Spread into a 9 x 13 pan and allow to set for 1 hour.
To make this version of the classic treats you follow the original recipe but add green food coloring before putting them in the pan.
Once the treats harden they get cut into rectangles. The rectangles are the heads of Frankenstein.
What type of food coloring should I use?
I prefer to use gel food coloring because I use less and it makes a more vibrant color. My favorite gel food coloring is Americolor Gel Food Colors. However, you can use regular food coloring from supermarket you’ll just need more of it.
Can I use any kind of chocolate chips?
If you use dark chocolate chips you’ll get a darker color that is closer to black. I used black candy melts to get a true black color. However, you can use milk or semisweet chocolate chips but you will have more of a brown color instead of black.
Can I Make these for other holidays?
Yes! You won’t want to put on the candy eyes and decorate them the same but you can dye them any color for a holiday. Dye them red and use them for Valentine’s Day. Dye them pink and blue and use them for a gender reveal. The possibilities are endless!
How Do I Store Rice Krispies Treats?
Store the Rice Krispies Treats in an air tight container for up to 7 days.
Once you’ve cut out the rectangular head shape you’ll need to warm up the candy melts or chocolate. I put 2 dots on each head and “glued” on the candy eyes first. Then I dipped the top of each rectangle into the chocolate for the hair.
After that I piped on the mouths. You can make a crooked line with stitches on it, make a smiley face, or just make an angry face. Do whatever you’d like.

After that all you need to do is wait until the chocolate or candy melts harden and they are ready to eat!
These are a fun treat that kids can help decorate. Let them make their own monsters or Frankenstein and decorate however they would like.
