Are you pregnant or know someone who is? Here’s a list of 18 freezer meals, mixes, and breads that you can make before baby arrives!
Being pregnant is exciting but it’s also a time to get prepared. In the months leading up to the birth of our son I decided that I needed to make some freezer meals so that we would have some hot meals to enjoy while he was still a newborn and keeping us up most of the night. I looked at a lot of recipes and made a list of the ones I wanted to make.
After talking with several other moms who have had babies in the last year I realized that in addition to dinners I should have some other things on hand. It was recommended to me that I have several mixes for pancakes or waffles available for making breakfast.
I was also told that quick breads or muffins would be great for breakfast or as a snack. I also canned pie filling because I love making a dessert whenever people come to visit and this way all I had to do was dump a jar of filling in a refrigerator pie crust and I had a fresh pie whenever company came.
How long can I freeze the breads and muffins?
Breads and muffins can be frozen for up to 6 months. To thaw simply unwrap them and place them on the counter to thaw completely.
All in all I had quite a stash in the freezer downstairs as well as several mixes in the pantry. Having these things ready before giving birth was a lifesaver! We enjoyed many hot meals during the first few months of his life as well as snacks and breakfast items. It was nice not having to run out to the store or spending extra time we didn’t have preparing meals.
How long can I freeze the freezer meals and Slow cooker meals?
These can be frozen for up to 1 year. However, they are best enjoyed within 6 months.
I’ve been asked several times when I had the time to make all of these meals. The answer is I started when I was about 30 weeks pregnant. J was our first child so I had extra time on my hands in the summer being that I’m a teacher. I made most of the freezer meals between 30-34 weeks of pregnancy.
I then made the breads and muffins around 34 weeks and canned the pie filling around 36 weeks. I finally made the mixes around 38 weeks. I did the meals first because I still had a ton of energy then and was glad it was only the mixes I waited to make until the end because I was beat by that point.
How long will the pie filling last?
Since you are canning the pie filling it will last for years. Simply make sure that the seal is tight. If you choose to freeze the pie filling instead of canning it then you can freeze it for up to 6 months.
I should also note that I’m a teacher so I have the entire summer off and used much of that time to make these meals. However, start around 30 weeks and make 2 or 3 meals each weekend and your freezer will be stocked before baby comes. You will be so happy you did this, trust me!
