Forget the yeast and endless hours of waiting and rising; try these soft and tasty no rise dinner rolls that can be ready in just 30 minutes!
Whenever I make soup on the weekends I love to make homemade rolls to go along with it. My favorite soup rolls are No Knead Dinner Rolls. A close second would be these light and fluffy and slightly sweet Honey Milk Bread Rolls.
This weekend was cold. It’s only the beginning of fall but there was a definite chill in the air and the wind didn’t help matters. I decided the only way to combat the cold was to make my Chicken and Dumpling Soup.
I wanted to make rolls to go with it but when I went to the pantry to grab some yeast I discovered I was out. This is a rarity because I am the queen of buying ingredients as soon as I run out and often have a back up of everything in the pantry.
Since I was out of yeast I quickly looked for a recipe for no yeast rolls. I knew I could make them from baking powder but I didn’t have a recipe that I could use. This creates a basic quick bread or unleavened bread.
How do you use Baking Powder to make rolls?
Sometimes you will need to make bread or rolls when you don’t have time for yeast fermentation or you are out of yeast. You can use baking powder to create a basic, unleavened bread. This is can be referred to as “emergency bread” and is not as fluffy or light as yeast-raised bread. However it can serve as a quick substitute since it will cause the dough to rise in the oven.
Ingredients:
- salted butter (I like using salted butter because it helps give the rolls additional flavor)
- milk (I use whole milk but you can use skim or plant based milk)
- sugar (this helps to enhance the flavor of the rolls and helps brown the outside)
- salt (sea salt or table salt can be used)
- baking powder (it’s very important your baking powder is fresh as this is what causes the rolls to rise when baked)
- all purpose flour (I prefer an all white dinner roll but you can use half all purpose flour and half whole wheat flour if you prefer)
To make the rolls preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or you can use a silicone mat.
Why do you use parchment paper when baking?
One of the primary reasons for using parchment paper on a baking sheet is to help prevent baked goods from sticking to the baking sheet or pan. It also makes for easy clean up as you can just pick up the parchment and throw it away. Parchment paper also eliminates the need to grease the baking sheet.
In a large mixing bowl you will combine the melted butter, milk, sugar, salt, and baking powder. The mixture should be bubbly.
Then add in the flour a bit at a time until it is all incorporated. Divide the dough into 14 pieces, roll each one into a ball, and place them on the baking sheet. Bake for 22-25 minutes.
Once the rolls come out of the oven brush them with melted butter. This will add flavor to the rolls. You can also sprinkle them with a variety of ingredients at this point.
What Can I sprinkle on top of the rolls?
After adding the butter different toppings can be added. Sesame seeds or poppy seeds can be sprinkled on top. If you are looking for a sweeter roll a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar can go on top. For Italian meals sprinkle garlic powder and oregano over top of the rolls. A hint of sea salt goes well with any meal.
These no yeast rolls are delicious when served warm with butter or jam. However, they can also be served at room temperature.
No rise dinner rolls are great when served with soups or pasta dishes. I often serve them with Pasta Primavera or Slow Cooker Bolognese. They also make a great side dish for holiday ham or turkey meals because they are so quick and easy to make.
How do you store No Yeast Dinner Rolls?
Dinner rolls can be stored in an air tight container or a zip top bag on the counter for up to 3 days. When ready to serve warm in the oven at 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes or put in the air fryer on 350 degrees for 4-5 minutes.
I would describe the taste of these as a cross between a dinner roll and a biscuit. They are great for soaking up soaks, sauces, and gravy. Definitely put them on your holiday menu this year!
