This summer turn delicious homemade lemonade into a patriotic drink with fresh berries. Red, White, and Blue Lemonade is a fun and easy summer drink.
Three cheers for the red, white, and blue! Every summer it seems as though red, white, and blue foods are readily available for cookouts and parties.
Whenever I think of patriotic summer parties I think of my parents house. All of our summer parties are held at their house. My dad is usually grilling, my mom is cooking the side dishes, and everyone is swimming in the pool. It’s always a good time and I leave feeling full.
Whenever we are at home I like to make something small to celebrate the patriotic holidays. One year I made Red, White, and Blue Shortcakes with fresh berries.
I also like to make no bake desserts like this No Bake Summer Berry Icebox Cake. My No Churn Patriotic Ice Cream is great with cakes or served on it’s own.
Another year I made red, white, and blue sangria. While it’s nice to have an alcoholic beverage when it’s hot outside, sometimes it’s almost too hot for that.
So this year I’m making red, white, and blue lemonade. While you can certainly use either store bought lemonade or bottled lemon juice, nothing is going to beat fresh squeezed lemon juice in this recipe.
How do you juice lemons?
You can juice a lemon with a citrus juicer, a hand juicer, or you can do it by hand. A citrus juicer basically does all the work for you. When using a hand juicer you will want to roll the lemon on a countertop to help release the juices and then cut the lemon in half crosswise. Place half of the lemon in the handheld juicer and squeeze the handles together to press out the juice into a container. When juicing by hand you will roll the lemon on the countertop of cut in half crosswise. Then squeeze the lemon, cut side up, into a bowl. Scoop out any seeds that are in the bowl.
This is a very simple recipe for lemonade. Fresh strawberries and blueberries make this non-alcoholic beverage red, white, and blue.
Ingredients:
- lemons
- granulated sugar
- fresh strawberries
- fresh blueberries
- sparkling water
- ice
To make the lemonade squeeze the lemons until you have half a cup of fresh lemon juice. Add the sugar to the lemon juice and stir until it is mostly dissolved.
Divide the blueberries between two glasses. Fill the glasses with ice. Crushed ice works best but ice cubes will work fine.
Pour half of the lemon mixture into each of the glasses. Fill each glass with sparkling water and then top with the chopped strawberries. Serve with a straw.
Can I use frozen fruit?
In general frozen blueberries will work in this drink but frozen strawberries are hit or miss. Frozen strawberries can get very soggy and fall apart. So while you can use frozen blueberries I would use fresh strawberries.
The lemonade is both sweet and tart. The berries add just a hint of flavor. I really enjoy eating them after they’ve been sitting in the lemonade for a while because they have a slight taste of lemon to them which is pretty tasty.
When I made and photographed this recipe I put the strawberries on the bottom and the blueberries on top, I soon realized it was much easier to put the blueberries on the bottom and the strawberries on top because they want to float. Either way you do it, this is a fun and festive beverage that kids and adults can enjoy.
