Sweetened Condensed Milk Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery, and just a bit chewy. The condensed milk adds a rich sweetness and keeps them perfectly tender, making every bite taste like a little bit of deliciousness.

I don’t know about you but I often make recipes that require sweetened condensed milk and then I’m left with half of the container.  Sometimes I’ll double the recipe, other times I will use the sweetened milk to make a small pan of fudge, but sometimes I’m just stumped.

What is sweetened condensed milk?

Sweetened condensed milk is thick, creamy milk that’s been cooked down to remove most of the water and then mixed with sugar. The result is a rich, silky smooth ingredient that’s super sweet and almost syrupy.

Since the sweetened condensed milk has been going up in price I hate to just throw it away so I’ve been looking for some other options for using it up.  One thing I use the condensed milk for it making my own Butterscotch Creamer or Pumpkin Spice Creamer. I’ve also used leftover condensed milk in No Churn Strawberries and Cream Ice Cream. You can also use it to make Chocolate Ganache for topping cakes and brownies.

I wanted to make a baked good using the sweetened condensed milk and wondered if I could use it in place of sugar in a recipe.   I started looking for cookie or brownie recipes that might use it.

I finally came to a sugar cookie recipe that looked simple enough and used up just the amount of sweetened condensed milk I had left.  Plus I liked that I could leave the cookies plain, frost them, or put a glaze on top of them.  I like when I have options.

These cookies were really easy to make with just six ingredients.   They are not sugar cookies that you can cut out as they will spread.

The original recipe says to refrigerate the dough for 1-2 hours before baking and if you want a super soft cookie that’s what I would do.  I ended up chilling for 15 minutes and that made for a sweet, chewy sugar cookie that was totally delicious.

Wooden cutting board with a cup of flour, a stick of butter, a cup of condensed milk, vanilla, and baking powder on it.

Ingredients:

  • salted butter (or unsalted if you prefer)
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • powdered sugar
  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • salt

In a large mixing bowl beat the butter until smooth and creamy.  Add the sweetened condensed milk and powdered sugar and mix until well combined.  Add in the flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix until just combined.  Refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 325 degrees.  Use a small cookie scoop and scoop the dough onto a baking sheet.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Remove from oven, let sit for 3 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to chill.

These cookies are really delightful!  They taste different then other sugar cookies because they are soft and chewy.  I really enjoyed the texture of them.

How do I make a glaze for these cookies?

Combine 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 Tablespoon milk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla and mix until combined.  Dip the tops of the cookies into the glaze and set back on the wire rack.  Sprinkle with sprinkles if desired.

I liked the cookies with and without the glaze.  The glaze added a bit more flavor to the cookies but it also made an already sweet cookie sweeter so use your judgement when deciding whether or not to glaze them.

Can I freeze these cookies?

You can certainly freeze the dough.  Simply use a small cookie scoop and scoop the dough onto a baking sheet.  Freeze for 30 minutes.  Place the dough balls in a freezer bag and freeze up to 6 months.  When ready to use remove however many dough balls you’d like and set them on the counter while your oven preheats.  Bake for 10-12 minutes.

These cookies are great to use on a cookie tray or to take with your to an event because they are pretty solid and hold up well.  They also won’t melt in the heat if you want to take them to a BBQ or outdoor party.

How do you store Sweetened Condensed Milk Cookies?

Store the cookies in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.   If you glaze the cookies put a piece of parchment paper in between the layers of cookies so they don’t stick together.
