I don’t know about you but to me Mardi Gras means food, food, and more food!  Every year I think about all the delicious options I can make and then in the two weeks leading up to the day I make as many of them as I can.

What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is the Carnival celebration which begins on or after Epiphany.  Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” which is what they called it because so many people eat rich, fatty foods before the Lenten season.

When I think of Mardi Gras foods the ones that come to mind are King Cake, beignets, shrimp Creole, donuts, and Jambalaya.  Many of the main dishes are flavored with spicy Cajun spices and are made of fish and seafood.

There are a lot of different baked good associated with Mardi Gras as well.  Donuts are a big deal on Fat Tuesday and often it’s fried donuts filled with jam or custard on the menu.

What is a King Cake?

A King Cake is traditionally served on or right before Mardi Gras.   It’s a cake associated with Epiphany in many countries and is also known as a three kings cake.  While the ingredients can differ country to country one thing that stays the same is that a baby figurine is baked into the cake or hidden inside after baking.   Whoever gets the piece of cake with the baby wins a prize!

When is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras occurs on the day before Ash Wednesday or the beginning of Lent.  It’s also been called Fat Tuesday because it’s the last chance people have to enjoy those foods they plan on giving up before Lent.

In the United States New Orleans is the towwn most associated with Mardi Gras.   Many different organization host parades in the two weeks leading up to the day.   Beads are thrown to the crowds, food and drinks are consumed, and it’s a big party every night.

Often times costumes and masks are worn around this holiday for the parades and the parties.  The colors associated with Mardi Gras are gold, green, and purple.

So are you celebrating Mardi Gras this year?   If so I have a list of 25 amazing Mardi Gras recipes that are sure to wow your family and friends!  There’s everything from cocktails to entrees to desserts so let’s get ready to eat!
