You’ll never have to guess when hard boiled eggs are done again with this easy to make and fail proof recipe for making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot!

A bowl of hard boiled eggs and one egg with the shell taken off.

I am not a huge fan of hard boiled eggs.   I will eat them in things like macaroni salad or in a salad.

Over the years I’ve tried several different ways of cooking them.  I’ve boiled them in water using a timer, boiled the water, removed it, then added the eggs with a lid, and I’ve made them and put them in an ice water bath.

While all of these methods work for the most part they aren’t consistent.  Sometimes my yolks are a little less cooked than I’d like or the eggs are hard to peel.

Ingredients:

  • eggs
  • water

How to Hard Boil Eggs:  Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot.  Place the steamer basket or trivet inside and place eggs on top.  Cook on high pressure for 5 minutes.  Naturally release steam for 5 minutes.  Then place the eggs in an ice water bath for 5 minutes.

Enter the Easy Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs.  To say I was skeptical was an understatement.  They call this the 5-5-5 method and it’s for a good reason.

Basically you put a cup of water in the Instant Pot.  Then you can add either the trivet or the steamer basket. Place the eggs on top.

Cook the eggs on high pressure for 5 minutes.  Release the steam naturally for 5 minutes before releasing the remaining steam.  Put in an ice bath for 5 minutes.  Then the eggs will be cooked and easy to peel.

A container with 4 eggs in it.

How do I peel the eggs?

After they come out of the ice water bath gently crack them on the counter then roll the egg to crack the shell.  Start at the base of the egg and easily peel the shell!

How do you store hard boiled eggs?

You can leave them in the shells in the egg container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.  If you peel them you can place them in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Can I make different types of eggs in the Instant Pot?

Yes you can.   For soft, just set whites and runny yolks cook on high pressure for 3 minutes and quick release the steam before placing in the ice bath.  For medium firm whites and jammy yolks cook on high pressure for 4 minutes and quick release the steam before placing in the ice bath.

How many eggs can I boil in the Instant Pot?

You can make 12 eggs in a 3 quart Instant Pot.  You can make 18 eggs in a 6 quart Instant Pot.  You can make 24 eggs in the 8 quart Instant Pot at a time.

I’ve tried this method 3 times and the eggs have been perfect every time.  They’ve also been super easy to peel.  I really can’t believe I haven’t tried this method before.

Since it works so well and it makes it easy to do I’ll be using this method from now on.  I also like that the shells are so easy to remove as that is always the worst part of making hard boiled eggs for me.
